This is a really old thread... I now have 2 WDs.. 1x850MB, 1x2.5GB...
For latest posts goto post number 10.
My duron is offline, it doesn't fold, its off!! Because my HDD in the duron is POS and it don't work very well in cold temps, its now about 14C° in my room!!! I'm freezing. this POS always makes a high pitch sound, hang system and windows get corruped... Its because of the cold!! So I can't fold w/ my duron
most computer parts love the cold. most harddrives do too.

I was told that normal oparation of HD is betwin 10 & 60C I'm now running about 14C. Though in the hot summer the HDD did make this high pitch couple of times, but not somethings to damaging, just the sound and after seconds it was gone. but now I can't run the comp at all it hangs cause it can't read from HDD, windoze got corrupted, I'll call the guy I got the HD from, and see if he'll change it! Its a crappy WD HDDs, I will never, ever buy anything w/ Western Digital written on!!!

Does your mobo have a network boot option? I haven't done any of this stuff myself, but it would be cool to have a driveless folding machine. A cluster of such machines would nice too :burn:

Hey! That's a great idia where can I get info on setting up this kind of machine???? It wouldn't matter to me, my main rig is folding anyway, I'll make another F@H folder for the duron to fold, but I need to set this thing up. I think I'll need WinNT of some sort, won't I? I only can use a Win98-WinME cause in XP & NT & 2k many games I use don't work.

Here's a link to a site that deals with mainly Linux based diskless workstations, but has some stuff about Windows:
http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/index.php
It looks like you'd need Windows Server to do a network boot.
A floppy or CD might make the task easier. Maybe have a bootdisk that has enough to get you on the network and then run a copy of Win95/98 off of a network share. I remember doing this with Novell Netware and Win3.11.
I'm looking into doing something like this myself, so if I find anything else, I'll let you know.

A device that makes more noise when cooler or colder could be signaling bearing failure. Metal expands when heated and contracts as it cools. I would start saving toward a new drive.

ARGH, I got a old 850MB WD drive  and it has no probs so, technicaly my comp is back online, I'm only having problems w/ connection sharing, so it may be some time till the duron will be back folding, but it should be soon.

My T-Bird was offline for about two weeks. It is up effective now, so I am back to two boxes folding.
The remaining boxes in the Sig will go online as soon as the Cat5 is run to them and they can get access to the 'net.

Ditto. I think I would have started a bon fire over in the corner by now. Is this just a folding box or you main rig?
