Hi-
I am running windows XP Pro SP2 on my laptop. I had my computer connected to a domain when I started, and my computer password worked when I belonged to that domain.
I then tried to drop the somain and connect to my home workgroup since I am home for the summer and wanted to use the at home printer. Now when I turn on my laptop, I can't enter my computer password because I am not trying to connect to the domain.
Is there a file or setting that I can edit using Ultimate BootCD or something similar? System Restore was not enabled, and the computer wasn't conecting to the internet to validate my laptop's password. Perhaps there is a way to sign on to a domain at the main login prompt anyway? Like userid@domain name? Would that work? Or do I have to just take any files off with UBCD and format my computer? Thanks.

For a domain password...not sure if you can hack that one out locally. You'll need to log in to the local admin (or another) account. From there you can simply log into that account anytime you want, then choose to log in to the domain at the login screen later on.
You can change the password for local accounts with any number of linux CDs designed for this purpose.

The only way you're going to be able to use your account again is to log on with a local account, and rejoin that machine to the domain. In order to rejoin it to the domain, you'll probably need to use global account, that has higher privileges than yours. Your account may or may not have sufficient privileges, to rejoin to the domain.

Yea I was able to change the administrator (local) password and log back in to my computer, but when I tried to rejoin the domain, after connecting to the VPN, I was told I didn't have sufficient privileges or something.
Aside from logging back into the domain, how do I change my local user pw so that I can use my desktop layout and stuff? Do I just create a userid that is the same as the previous user? So if my ID was jsmith and it doesn't exist when I try control userpasswords2, then just add jsmith to use my settings??
Only a domain admin can join a computer to a domain, typically.
You could just copy your domain profile to a local account. Login as a local admin, start -> run sysdm.cpl -> advanced -> user profiles and copy the profile. Takes awhile and no progress bar, will appear to be not responding, just let it run. Note - you can't be logged in as either of the users you're copying.

Go into Docs & Settings, and copy everything you need from your roaming profile folder, to the folder of the local account you're currently using. I'd also suggest remembering to remove them, when your admin rejoins you to the domain.

Ok just copying the documents and settings folder worked fine. I'll just use the computer until I have time to wipe and reinstall everything. Thanks!
