Ok Ok so they really don't hate deployed soldiers. But I am currently in Iraq with no personal internet that I could hook my laptop up too. I kept hearing alot of good things about Half-Life 2 and since I loved playing the original I figured "hey I'll Buy it". Well it comes in the mail and I quickly put the disk in my laptop and BAM INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED. I was like SON OF A B****!!!!! I can't stand games like this why can't they just put the game on the disk it self instead of installing Steam and then Downloading it. We are eventually gonna get personnal internet here but even then its going to be just as good if not worst than a 56K connection. Personally I am upset at myself for not researching this and im upset because I cant play a game cause I dont have the convience of internet. I think Valve and other gaming companies need to look at this possibility i know abotu 98% of the U.S. today has an internet connection in there house but what about people like the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen of our nations fighting force who want to relax for a bit but don't have all the comforts of back home. I'm probably ranting about a useless topic but now all I have to show for $45 DVD is a new skeet plate to throw up and shoot at.:bang head

I believe if you can get to an internet connection once, you can activate and update your game and set Steam to offline mode where you won't need to be online to play it anymore.

I had to endure this during the time HL2 was released.
No way around it. I would never plug into the military network and risk getting slammed.
If the 1 time thing is true, then all I can recommend is doing it when you're on leave.

I agree 100% with SteveLord dont even think about plugging into the military network wait untill leave, and update it then put steam into offline mode as Leviathan41 said

I got the big green shaft and already went on leave so i have to wait about 8 months before i go home. But is there a way i can install the game but not update it??? because if i update it. It will take like 1 1/2 weeks to download it. the net out here for personal use is worst than 56k and i would never put a civilian computer on the military network. I know all the consequences esp. because I am the Network Admin.

HL2, EP1 and EP1 have one with a certain "cinematic" mod.

Just try to get that certain "cinematic" mod over a 56k connection...

right click on the game and in properties you can set it to not auto update the game.
If you have the DVD, you dont need to download the game. All you have to do is create a steam account and verify HL2 with it, which doesnt take long at all.

I have the DVD but when i hit install half-life 2 it installs steam logs me on and when i hit install Half-life 2 it starts to Download it from the net.
Did you try putting the disk in while logged on to steam?

the intial install requires internet for verification. There is no way you can install HL2 without anysort of internet connection. after the intial verification you don't need internet again.

I did that and when i try to install it from the disk I get an error saying "Not Enough Disk Space to run Steam" the thing is I have 20Gb of space on my HDD and i have 4Gb of RAM in my system which I am barely using. I tried looking the error up on Steam Support site and I couldn't find anything on it.
