Hello All
I have Vista 64 with one WD 150 GIG Caviar RE and one WD 74 gig Raptor. Its time for more space and may as well upgrade at the same time, but what do I do.
Should I get a WD 10,000 rpm VelociRaptor 300 Gig and put Vista and games (Forged Alliance and Starcraft 2) on that and use the 150 and 74 gig as storage for movies and pictures, OR, get two WD 7200 RPM Caviar 300 gig drives and put them on Raid O.
Basically I want too make it as fast as I can for $400 Aust,
Thanks for the help guys.
Trevor
:welcome: to the forums.
Edit:
Sorry thought that was a 150gb raptor you had.
I love my velociraptor, but its definitely a premium you pay.
you could get a VR 300 for OS/games, and then a 500gb second drive for storage and sell your current 74gb raptor.

How much space do you feel you'll need?

Samsung and SeaGate both make drives that compare favorably to the velociraptor. You might want to consider one of those. Forgive me for not knowing companies in your part of the world but you might want to consider something like this drive:

For your budget, you could even afford to got to RAID level 0+1. You would get plenty of space, plenty of speed and you could consider the redundancy as a free bonus.

Get the VelciRaptor, there is no 7200RPM drive that performs nearly as well and comparisons have clearly proven this. It has the best STR and access times of any desktop drive, which makes it fast and quick. Buying lesser drives(7200RPM) and putting them in RAID0 will increase your STR over the VelociRaptor, but will do nothing for access times which is what makes everything more snappy. Then sell the Raptors to pay for a nice storage drive like the WD 640GB AAKS (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=394)drive.

Thanks fellows.
The reviews where were I got the idea of the VR, It really out performed all the other drives by a long shot and was no noiser and didnt use any more power, how can you loose. I just wasnt sure on the setup, but you guys have helped.
1 VelociRaptor on order, will use the two old drives as storage for now and next pay will get the other drive you said.
Thanks heaps guys
