i already have a drive on the way due to my OS drive being out of warranty, but i've been having issues with my OS drive.

its been making a kinda dry waterpump noise (sucking/clicking sound) i'm fairly sure its something wrong with the head motor maybe? i hear it for a duration of time then once it re initializes it kinda just goes on its marry way. it happened to me about 2 times around 2 weeks ago, then stopped, last night every time i tried to do anything it kept clickin so i shut her down.

going to try to hit it with acronis tonight to get a good backup before it dumps on me ;) anything i should try beforehand to get the drive to do a full backup with no errors? the freezer method?

edit: oh, i had checked SMART and its error free, the drive is also at about 92% health from what i see.

Smart is good, but I would run a full diagnostic using the manufacturers diagnostic utility - usually you can find a bootable version of the diagnostic to burn to CD. I would run that after you get a good backup.

I use ghost to backup images, and when there are errors I use the "force clone" and "ignore crc" flags to force the image creation. If that doesn't work, I use a live CD and try to copy off the most important files individually.

Freezer method is last ditch effort, I don't think your in that bad of shape yet.

well i did with sea tools, and it came out as good i did that the first time the problem happened. i honestly think my data is intact, but the arm is just either hanging or something.

I've fixed clicking issues before by replacing the PCB thats on the bottom of the drive. You would need an identical drive to swap out the board and make the old drive work again.

It sounds like the drive is physically fine, but the controller is glitching.
