I just got off of a chat with Seagate. It turns out that their drives after the .10 (maybe earlier) have active shock response built in. Which means they'll park the head somewhere to protect the data on the platters in the case of a drop when its running- in the case of my drive it is the inner edge - if the head is on the outer part of the drive at the time there is no doubt this would produce a pronounced noise with similar characteristics to the click of death. Maybe even identical characteristics.
Anybody else with 7200.10 have these random clicks?
