View Full Version : Power Supply Choices?

Ok, since I first picked out a power supply by price (which is now limiting me), I want to do it right this time. I may replace my G80 GTS with a 9800 GTX, and if I do, I want to upgrade the power supply to leave room for the possibility that I may want to run 2 9800GTX's,
So right now I'm looking at these two units:

What are your thoughts or suggestions. I can't seem to find it now but there was a modular power supply that had round connectors on it to connect the cables to the power supply, I liked the looks of it but can not remember the name (or if it was a good choice or not).
EDIT: Nevermind, found the one I was talking about.

I have some bad things about that brand, so maybe I should stick to the first two.
Thanks again!

How are the new Ultra X3 series power supplies now? I know they had issues with some of their stuff a while back, but haven't heard anything recently and the 800 watt and 1000 watt units seem to be rated pretty good.

Defiant,
Looks like the Corsair VX750w puts out more 12v rail that the X3 800w (60 amps vs. 55 amps). I think the Corsair is your better choice for less money and better quality. However, it's not modular.
Looks like the X3 800w is an over rated 700 watt.

Also Corsair for my money. I think the HX620 would do you nicely and is also modular and at a good price.

Would this be enough to run a Q6600 and dual 9800 GTX's (just planning for the future so I don't have to deal with what I'm dealing with now), I'm also running 3 hard drives, two DVD Burners, 5 case fans, and two cold cathode lamps.
I'm currently running a 500w PS, and I wouldn't be comfortable running SLI in this with my 8800GTS (G80). I'd like to just swap that out with a 9800GTX for the price so I would be a bit better off and hopefully SLI that down the road (plus I may swap the motherboard for a 780i at some point as well).
EDIT: That Corsair 750 looks NICE, I would buy it right now if it were modular.

I know its overkill, but the Corsair 1000HX looks nice too. That would be more than enough room for additional drives/cards.

You could go 9800gx2 sli if you had enough connectors on a hx620 :P
With everything else i reckon you'd be under 500w at load for power consumption

Defiant,
The Corsair HX620 is not certified for 8800GTX SLI. I know on paper it appears to be fine. Anything up to that is fine. Those 9800GTXs SLI make the issue clear: I wouldn't.
If OW stops by, I think he will tell you Corsair TX750 minimum for 9800GTX SLI.
