Hi,

I'm trying to overclock my tbird 1400 to 1700 but I'm running into little technical difficulties. First of all, here is the other hardware I'm using:

Asus A7A266 m.b
512 m. pc133 crapo ram
geforce 2 pro msi
enermax 450 w psu
Koolance watercooler

My ram is crap, I cant get it past 140 fsb. I was wondering if that was a "acceptable" level for generic crapo? I can bump my multiplier to 11.5 n.p, as soon as I hit 12 my system gets blue screens in win 98se. Even if I up the vcore to the maximum voltage 1.85. What could be causing this multiplier screw up? Btw, I have not messed with the bridges on my chip, I am using the jumperfree mode in the bios to change the various values of the components.

I'm using Sandra for cpu, multimedia as well as memory burn-ins. I use 3dmarks 2000/2001 for my video card and overall performance. Are there any other software you guys would recommend to test the stability of my system?

I have tons of patience and I would like to get this puppy to 1.7ghz eventually, thanks for any tips or advice.

I have an a7a266 and the jumperfree mode wouldnt work for me. I do know if you set the jumpers it will work. i did it to mine as long as you have your chip unlocked.

IMHO get some better ram. I have crucial DDR and i can get mine up to 155 without problems.

Sandras burn in is good and so is 3dmark2001 those are the ones i use.

The only problem that I can see, given the rest of your rig, is you memory.

Thanks for the replies guys, o.k new RAM it is. What about the multiplier problem? When i load up wcpuid it reads the multiplier I am currently using (11.5) so my guess would be that the jumperfree works up to that mult. but runs into some problems after that. I was wondering also, could my psu be a problem? I get some odd 4.8V readings from the 5V line in the bios's hardware monitor. Im assuming this is not a big gap but I might be wrong.

I will set the jumpers manually tonight to check if the 12.5 mult. works.

Hey, if you go to ww.Crucial.com you can buy 1GB (!!!) sticks of PC133 for the low, low, low price of $305.99!

That would be fun.... very fun... very excessive... only if it works with your mobo.... haha.. sorry, this was very off topic... :)

that's "www" with 3 w's, sorry. :)

Sadly I heard that win98se tends to choke up blood when your computer has anything over 512 megs of ram:eek:

Unlock your chip and start from there.

Yeah, well Win98 does like to choke and burn and cough and sputter and even throw up with too much RAM. Well, you could always spend another hundred bucks and get Windows XP!!!

Hey, it's just money!!!

(just kidding... with the ONE GB of RAM thing... that would be awesome, but excessive!
hmm... what it I filled up all 4 banks on my KR7.... hmm.... with ONE GB of DDR266 per bank... mmmmmmm.... I'D HAVE ONE SUPER DUPER SERVER!)

I was afraid it would come to this, Ill start doing my homework on the chip unlocking...

It's crazy the things you learn by building your own :burn:

If your cpu is a Thunderbird and not an XP, getting to 1700MHz is gonna be real tough. It has been done, but it is pretty rare, they usually top out at 1550-1650MHz. Your definately gonna need more core voltage, maybe as much as 2.0-2.2v. Alot of cooling will be needed because the t-bird at these speeds and voltages put out a great deal of heat.

I have cheap PQI PC-133 memory and its running stable @160mhz and the performance is also great its even beating some DDR memory

You might make it to 1700, only 90mhz to go.

Id say.. drop the FSB back to 133 then use the jumpers on the board to try for 12.5x133 (1666) if it works at that speed then try increasing the fsb.

You might need a fair bit more voltage to get 1700 but as long as you keep an eye on your temps you will be ok. Thats one big advantage of watercooling, it wont let the temps go sky high straight away.
