I'm planning on building a PC for a friend, retaining as many as his current PC parts as possible.

The tentative specs are:

Graphics: 2x "Zotac 8800GT 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card" in SLI
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53GHz (1066MHz) Socket 775 3MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Overclocked to 4GHz (hopefully)
RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 DHX Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered
Mobo: Asrock PENRYN1600SLI-110DB Nvidia 650i SLI Socket 775 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
CPU Fan: Some big beefy thing that I can't remember the name of.

His current PSU is was a fairly cheap 550W one. I typed the specs on it, and it reads..

+3.3v 28 amp
+5v 35 amp
+12 30amp
-5v 0.5 amp
-12v 0.8 amp
+5vsb 2.5amp

I'm also curious about the overclockability of that CPU with that motherboard and RAM. I'm trying to get good value for coin. All of this is from the UK, so I'm choosing out of this site's (http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components/cat/Power-Supplies?refmen=tn) power supplies.
I'm also curious about overclocking the graphics cards too.

Any help appreciated.

It its a cheap one, do not trust it further than you can throw it... get a decent one, its not worth risking all that nice hardware.

I have the E8400 and it overclocks to 4.2Ghz on air.

It really all depends on the motherboard, which I have not seen the BIOS for.

Parl,

A good quality 550w would power that system but not that power supply. Firstly, a 550w with a 30 amp 12v rail appears to be overrated. That's only 360 watts 12v and it appears to be more like a 400-450w supply at best and of questionable quality. Overclocking is out of the question.

That Corsair HX520 should do just fine with 480 watts on a 40 amp 12v rail or a Corsair VX550w non-modular if that is a preference and it's available to you.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should proceed to buy another PSU.

I've looked some up at what I consider reasonable prices.

- Hi-Power Black 700W 14cm Blue LED Fan PSU - 20+4pin 4x SATA 4x PCI-E (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135197)
- Arctic Power 700W PSU - With PCI-E, 4x SATA, 20+4, ATX12V, 8pin +12V Connectors (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124927/show_product_reviews)

And then there's a list of some more at higher prices here (http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?page=6&sortfilter=ascend&limit=10&intStoreID=2&intCatID=149), that I'm willing to go with...

So will I be alright to overclock to about 4GHz on the CPU with this hardware?

Would the Corsair 650TX not be better for a few pounds more?
