View Full Version : 1 well placed fan=3 degrees less

One day I got the idea of trying to cool my GeForce3 a bit more and maybe get a few more MHz out of it.

So while I'm deciding on whether I'm buying a new HSF for it or not I got the idea of temporarily cooling the back of the card with an 80mm fan. So I take one out of my case that wasn't really doing anything anyways and put Silicone on the heads of the screws so that they sort of acted as feet and didn't short out my card while it's resting on it.

Well today I finally got around to it and put it on and started surfing the forums. Amazingly I glance at my MBM temps and it shows my CPU1 temp as 28C instead of the usual 30C. To experiment I take off the fan and the temps go back up to 30 again.

As you can tell I was quite shocked to find this and decided this was a permanent solution.

My theory is that the fan is blowing air onto the motherboard and in turn it's cooling the area around the core, where my waterblock doesn't touch. Any other theories?

BTW this is all with me Folding.

Just thought some people would find this interesting.

I got a 4-5c drop by adding a fan blowing over my AGP/PCI slots. It just goes to show you that even with watercooling, you shouldn't forget about airflow.

Yup you can't forget that when you add a GPU cooler you still need some air going through there and your best bet is an exhaust fan since it will attract cool air at all times to the GPU Cooler.
