View Full Version : GPU points on an ATI 3870 X2

I have a Q6600 running the SMP getting around 1800 to 2000 PPD. I added my 3870 x2 with the GPU2 console version last night. I am only getting around 200 PPD with the GPU folding. Does the Nvidea 8800 fold that much faster? People are getting a lot more points with the GPU client than I am.
Any ideas? I tried it with the SMP shup down, still 7 or 8 mins per frame on the GPU.
Thanks for any ideas.
And yeah, I do fold for another team. But cancer is cancer. Help is greatly appreciated.

That seems very low. The nvidia GPU's are doing much higher.
Here a link to the ATI benches http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=566857.
The nvidia benches are on the 2nd page if you want to compare.

That is definitely low. My single 3870 at stock puts out around 1800-1900ppd.
It seems like something is stealing a lot of your GPU's production. Could you give more details on your install and set up. Sounds like Gibletzor could offer invaluable assistance to you.
Is your card in a PCIe slot for sure?

Well I'm not sure how much help I can be. I've only been running the GPU client for a couple of weeks now. The only time I've ever seen my ppd drop that low is when I leave the GPU client running as I play a game. Like right now, I'm playing Medieval 2: Total War on my desktop and I'm getting 340ppd out of my GPU.
Which Catalyst drivers are you using?
You're right on the $$$ though, G!
After the basic slot question, that should be next, imo. You would know what drivers were working for that card, and I have no idea because I don't have that card.
U da man, G!
If you're running Win SMP accross all four cores, you must set the priority of the GPU Client to low under the advanced options of config. Win SMP should be run at the default priority, idle.

Thanks for the info. The card is in the correct slot. (board only has one PCI E slot). Cat driver is: 8.501.0.0 from 6/2/08. I will reset the GPU priority and check on the SMP, it should be at the default.
Thanks for the help, will see if this gets it more PPD.

I'm not sure how well Cat 8.5 works with the GPU2 client. I used it with 8.4 for the first week or so and it was fine, and just upgraded to 8.6 a few days ago, and I get the same production. I skipped over 8.5 because several people here in the ATI section were having problems or performance drops in some games. And I'm really lazy sometimes when it comes to upgrading drivers :D Do all your games run fine? Might be something wrong with the drivers themselves, and they might just need a good clean and reinstall.
ChasR sounds like he's got the real answer though. My next idea was a CPU priority issue.

I am on the 8.4 Cats and no difference. Sucks. Thanks for the help, any other ideas?

did you switch the core priority from "lowest possible" to "slightly higher" in the GPU client configuration?

I set the GPU to low. What should it be at? ChasR says low. Will be glad to try any options.
Thanks,

Try setting it like I have here, except in the part I put the red box around, change the "lowest possible" box, to "slightly higher. Keep the CPU usage bar up high.
Unless that's how you already have it. If so, I am out of ideas for right now.

That is how it is set up. I don't have a F@H control panel. Mine is all console, did I download the wrong one?

You have to right click on the icon in the bottom left (next to the clock) and select "configure".

Perhaps I do have the wrong one. There is no such icon by my clock. I have the Avast icon, one for Realteck audio, and one for safely removing hardware (for a flashdrive). To change the settings, I delete my config file and restart the 'puter and it wants the user name and all that stuff.
Are you using the graphical version for GPU folding? I thought the console was faster?

EThere is only one type of GPU2 client...

Don't know what the heck I had running on my video card:confused:. I got the GPU2 running! Thanks for the help! I think it has killed the SMP though... will have to do some reading on it when I get back from work.
Thanks!

From the screen you posted, it looks like the single core CPU one.

Yeah, that looks like the beta 6 single core CPU client in the picture.
Good to hear you got it going! What kind of ppd are you getting now?

I feel kinda stupid! Works great now! FahMon has me at 1.4k. GPU stuff is great! I should have another 3850 folding in a week or two. I will have to kick a few WU's over to Team 32 for the help getting mine running.

Actually my advice wasn't geared to the systray client, though it should have been. "lowest possible" is idle priority and "slightly higher" is low priority. In client.cfg idle priority is 0 and low is 96.
