I just bought a liteon DH-401S BD-Rom drive for my HTPC. I get choppy playback when there is motion. My first thought would be the processor as it goes to 100% when this happens but I figured the 7950gt would handle the load enough to take it off of the processor. I enabled hardware acceleration in the player software but it does not do anything. What do you think the problem could be?
HTPC
liteon DH-401S
7950gt (hdmi adapter)
amd 3700+ @2.5GHz
2Gb of ram
asus a8n-sli Deluxe
powerDVD 7.3 BD editon
37" lcd (720P)

the vid card doesnt do al the work, it is the CPU more so i think....
what software are you using?
try media player classic?
try not running full screen see if it happens?

The software I am using is powerDVD 7.3 BD editon, XP pro sp3, 175.16 nvidia drivers.
Ran it at 1/3 screen, same thing happens, cpu usage is the same as full.
I got media player classic and cant get it to work, I get the message "Windows can not read from this disk." same if I click on the drive itself.

with power dvd can you assign the affinity to then cpu 1 instead of cpu 0 ? and set the priority above normal?
does regular media player play it or no? i guess it being blu-ray having pwoerdvd installed alone isnt enough to let it work (unlike dvd's)

i am going to search around when i have some time, see why this may be happening..
did you check for a firmware update for the drive? any searches show any other people having the issue?
have you made sure the drive is not running in some UDMA mode or something in the bios slowing it down?

The firmware is up to date, the drive was manufactuerd in May.
Yes other people are having the issue but its hard to tell why some do and some dont.
I am starting to think that this old amd 3700+ cant handel bul-ray platback.

possible, i have a P4 northwood 3Ghz that every 10-15 mins has stuttering just playing HD content, even streamed over my network (it cant play direct off the harddrive - laptop, even though 7200 RPM stutters like mad!
if your cpu is hitting %100 could be it, mine hits %100 and that is with videos anywhere from 4k bitrate to 8k bitrate

Do you think a dual-core cpu would help?

Dude I went through this, it's a nightmare. I had these issues too and then I solved them. I'm running a 3400+ or something for a CPU and an 8800GT on a monitor with higher res.
Umm first of all get the latest PDVD.
You're trying to play right from disc right? Not a rip or anything? Try using AnyDVD and see if that helps at all, I think that's what I did.
If that doesn't help search Google, it took me a WHILE to get Blu-Rays playing easily on my computer and a LOT of software stuff but now all I use are AnyDVD and PDVD8 platinum.

Yeah, for best results you'll need a modern CPU and video card. I don't think the 7 series even decodes Bluray..
edit: Here's an article http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-780g-chipset,1785-3.html
Dunno if 780g is even a 939 chipset or what, I'm not into AMD stuff :)

It says BD edition. :P
If my CPU which is slower than his can handle it, his can too.
In fact, I'm even using the same drive.
You know what I think I made a thread in storage section about this. Hang on.
Search is your friend, little nublet.

That udf thing. I forget where I got it but it was definitely like, halfway down page three of some small-time forum and that's it. Google your ass off for this file. I had to try a few different places.
Moral of the story: If you make a thread and solve the answer yourself, always post the solution for archiving. Seriously!

tom10167- thanks for the heads up on the toshiba driver (udf2.5) that is a must have for anybody with blu-ray.
*edit*
I took it back to frys today :( I am going to buy a HD DVR for the same $. I still have SD programming, the only HD I get now is local off-air.
