hey, I have a 1.4Ghz AMD Athlon Not over clocked. and a global win blah blah with one of those screaming Delta Fans. acording to the BIOS the heat is 70c dont know how acurate that is, but to the touch, the heatsink is not that hot, warm.

My guess is its not seated properly. Turn that bad boy off quick and make sure! Also, did you apply some ASII?

The fact that the heatsink isn't very hot means the contact probably isn't good.

TURN IT OFF BEFORE YOU CPU DIES....thank you, make sure that the heatsink is sitting properly on the cpu and making contact i also suggest you change you thermal interface between the cpu and the heatsink..

What those other guys said..and................this should be in AMD CPU's (or, maybe cooling?) :)

ok, so some Artctic Silver stuff, would this over heating cause windows not to load? because. I let my CPU set for like 2 days or so with the heat sinc attached, so the CPU got cold, then I hook it all up today, I reinstall windows(replace whats on there now with out Reformating) I restart and it wont load windows. think because its getting to hot?

if you give it time to cool down, and it still wont boot into windows..I dont think thats a heat problem...my system boots into windows in under 20 secs....Im not sure but i dont think your CPU is gonna get to hot in 20 secs....

It only takes 10 secs max even with the heatsink sitting poorly on the chips core for the chip to fry nice and toasty...I know this from experience.

Either way his cpu is still running way to hot.

Yeah, don't even know it is dying till you get that black screen of death, no boot.

i used to run at 69c no probs unclocked, but seeings how amd say not to go over 70c yeah man somethings up, try checking ur temp sensor, apparently u can see them?, is it IN the processor by any chance? whats ur system temp, if ur system temp is 45-50c then thats ur problem.

Section 6 Thermal design.. Thats all ima say.

that technical sheet from amd says the maximum die temps for the xp processors are 90 degrees C. Can the processors really go that high for any length of time?

heh.......... 90c is the max temp that the core is designed to work............that doesn't mean that it's safe to opperate at that temp.................I think the organic substate that the Xp's are made of will melt at that temp................and since it only takes 10 seconds or so to fry a AMD chip without cooling I would have to say that 90c is a pipe dream for AMD

Once I left the fan on my Volcano 6cu+ unplugged for almost an hour, eventually the machine locked up. I rebooted and went straight to bios, the temp was 59c. Just for your consideration.

Btw: it was the Duron in my sig.

yah, 90c is what they melt at man dont go there! according to the overclockers site 70c is the reccommended limit for athlons

i wasnt planning on trying it :D i was just currios if it could be done

hey can u post up a link to a datasheet that tells me about watts and temps of athlons rather than xps please, i have have tried to find it but have given up after half an hour!

At the front of overclockers there is a program called radiate. This should help you with this. Look (as I remember) under miscellaneous. Not sure that is were it is but I know that on the front of this site is where it is located.

Ok. Here is the link for the Athlon.

Now on My 1.2 athlon. Before I had lapped and put heatsink transfer paste on and applied adaquate fan cooling my temps were around 60C idle and 70C full load. Not my board (And MANY MANY others )utilize an onboard sensor which reads the ambient tempatures around the CPU chip, unlike the XP the reg athlon have no on die diode. So that means my chip was 5-10 degrees cooler than these temps which people were telling me "OMG your gonna melt your board, unplug it right away@"

I ran this chip with NO problems at all. But then I decdied to OC so I started adding a lot of cooling. I just wanted to add my 2 cents that temps ove 50C for regular non oc boards wont kill it (theyre not expecially good for longevity. But the chip will not spontaneously combust if ran at these temps) thats all.
