I'm wondering about how to correctly lap a heatsink once you get to the high values. Most grit ~1000 and higher is wet/dry paper, does this mean i should use water or that i could use water, or is that just a name? Also, i would like to use a marker to mark the entire bottom of my heatsink, that way i can easily see the progress. Would this be bad for the sand paper? or does it not matter?

Wet/Dry paper means you can use it wet or dry. When wet, the paper is rinsed clean by the water, and produces a better finish. When used dry, the particles of metal can add to the grit of the paper to produce scratches, or load up (filling the gaps between the 'grits' on the sandpaper making it less effective).

I place my piece of glass across the sink and let the water dribble on a corner of the paper constantly. Used wet, the paper is also reusable many times.

Using a marker will not effect the sandpaper at all.

Have fun.
