I don't know if anyone here remembers me (probably not) but I was an active member here for several years under a different user name (Bill Green - I think) and was a "senior member" just before the forum changed formats in late 2000. Anyway, I have been running a Supermicro P4DC6 dual P4 xeon motherboard since last summer with 1.7gig xeons. Great set up for video work but not overclockable (inexcusable!). I just bought two 1.8gig P4 Prestonia Xeons and installed them this past Saturday. At first Sandra Pro gave me pretty wacky benchmarks. But earlier today I updated Sandra Pro to 2002.1.8.59 and ran some benchmarks. Whatever problems exhibited initially disappeared with the update. Here are the benchmarks (Note- If these image files are too large, let me know and I'll change them to links) -

Me likes! Note that SMT and SMP are both enabled for the tests. Windows XP Pro recognizes four CPUs (not two) in both the Device Manager and the Task Manager. In the above tests four threads were run at the same time during the tests. All tests followed a clean reboot of the system. Now if I can only figure a way to Overclock this beast, my life will be complete! :)

Those are some serious benchmarks!
How do some of you guys get those drop down list options?

Thanks Guys. I guess the drop down windows you asked about Phoenix are because it's the Pro version. It's called "Pro" because you have to pay for it (as if that's all it took to be a Pro!).

Jae87 - Good point about the heatsinks! :)

as far as im aware those dropdowns appear on MP systems while the single-processor options appear on one-processor systems

That's a sweet benchmark :D

Makes sense! Thanks.

How much do those chips cost out of interest. I am looking into building a dual cpu system for help with maths/phys Phd.

Can stand alone P4s run like that, if not how much will a
p4xeon cost? Are there SMT and nonSMT ones?

The 1.8 Prestonias are about $350 each. They are socket 603 and will only work with a i860 chip set. The Foster (original) P4 Xeons (.18) are also socket 603 but only 256k L2 cache not 512k and no SMT. On a 603 socket board, either will work with only one cpu.

The latest revision of the non-xeon P4 is socket 478 (.13) and I believe does utilize SMT and also has a 512k L2 cache.

Socket 603 boards will cost upwards of $500, so check it all out carefully before you buy anything.

Stand alone P4's cannot reach those scores. I have received really good scores on my system but not that high! Those scores have got to be the highest ever posted here!

I'm too jealous and that system would kill although it wouldn't benefit me too much since I'm a single processor only as no programs I use support the dual or in your case quad :D

The new 478 pin P4s are called "Northwood". Beats me where Intel comes up with these names! I couldn't think of the name earlier.

Holy MFLOPS, Batman!

Great benchmarks! I have a dual 1.7 Xeon at work (Fosters, no SMT, drat) and my benchmarks don't even come close to that!

Benchmark Results
Current Processors Dhrystone ALU 6505 MIPS
Current Processors Whetstone FPU/SSE2 1775/4145 MFLOPS

I wanted to wait for the Prestonia's but the machine had to be purchased before the end of the year.

Hmmmm, I smell upgrade!

we need you to join our folding team and reverse the logic that p4s are bad folders. awesome scores man.

Well, they -are- bad folders... AMD's have much better floating point... I don't see dual Xeon's beating a single XP1900 in folding... sad but true.

*Wonders how fast you'll do WU's*

1. That my friends are why duallies rule!

2. P4's are not SMP capable. Only the P4 Xeons are. Here's the kicker. They are the exact same chip only SMP capable. No extra cache, no nothing. Just double the price.

3. Fold if you want, but it is pointless to do so on a SMP machine. The program has yet to be made (as promised) SMP capable. I have 3000 Mhz worth of dual machines sitting here not folding because of this. I also have an extra 1200 Mhz worth of single CPU machines not folding in protest of the dualies not being supported.

actually there is a way to get folding to use duallies.....i believe you run two copies of foldgin and assign each to a different cpu...

I wouldnt call it pointless to fold just because you cant run smp. you can still use both processors to fold. plus a lot of people are folding to help the team or to help science. its a good cause.

Sorry....its just the principle behind it. This is the exact reason I quit folding for United Devices. They kept saying they would add Dual CPU support and never did, and they were sponsored by Intel for gods sake. I was more than ready to join when the new system rolled out as it was supposed to support SMP, but it still doesnt. Therefore I won't support it. I know...my principles suck, you're not the only one telling me this, but they are still my principles.
