Well I just installed an 8045 onto my Duron 750@1003. I also switched from Radio Shack thermal grease to ASII, and beefed up the northbridge fan.

Before:
Thermoengine with a duct exhaust and a Sunon 40 cfm fan and RS thermal grease.
Stock AK31 Northbridge active cooling.
One mediocre intake fan.
Ambient 70F
Mobo 27C
CPU 45 C

After
Pal 8045 lapped with a duct exhaust and a Sunon 40cfm on each end and ASII.
Sunon 9cfm fan on stock heatsink on Northbridge.
One Sunon 40 cfm intake fan
Ambient 70F
Mobo 24C
CPU 35C

Those are folding temps btw. I love being under 40 again. :)

The 8045 is a great little cooler. I went to it from the retail stock sink.

Been getting on MBM with it on Dragon+:
Ambiant 70F
Mobo 22C
CPU 32C

39C is the top I have seen under full Load and before with the retail 42C was idle. A 10C drop with Alpha :)

I've got the sink ducted to exhaust. The duct has a Sunon 40cfm fan on each end.

How much better is this heatsink than a SK6 with Delta?

Well it's about 10dba quieter for one thing. Of course if you like loud you can always hook up a delta 68 or a delta 80. :)

The 8045 is a better cooler than the sk6, but I'm not sure by how much. Best thing would be to check a site that has a comparison. I generally like anandtech and dandsdata for that.

Bleagh, the Sunon's are 50cfm, not 40. I shouldn't post when I'm tired.

it is good to see that high performance heatsinks can still be quiet. my watercooling is probably louder then some of these setups, i have 3 120mm fans and 2 80mm deltas

nihili - wanna try an experiment on fan set up?

Sure, what do you have in mind?

could you post a pic I don't understand how you are doing the ducting with two fans?

Cool but I think it may get lower if say you add the world's most powerful 80mm fan!

The Delta that pushes like 80cfm or something.
Hope you don't mind a hair drier in your case if you have it though.

The motherboard seems a little high hows the air flow in the case?

Good temps man.

I was wondering how it would perform on the PAL8045 with the air coming off of it since it was designed that way. Not sure how long the stack should be so try to experiment:beer:

I don't have a digital camera and a pic won't show the fans anyway. But I think I can describe it well enough. I'll also try to hunt up a picture of the old setup, it had two fans also.

I've got a PAL 8045 sitting on a Shuttle AK31 in a midtower case. The 8045 has an 80mm fan mounted to it in the standard fashion, sucking air off of the heatsink. In addition there is an 80mm fan positioned at the standard spot onthe back of the case (just below the psu) which is exhausting. I've connected these two fans together with a short piece of 4" vinyl dryer duct.

Putting the fans in line this way helps them overcome the static pressure built up by the sink, duct, and case (when I get my dremel that silly metal grid is going to be the first thing to go). It basically ensures that I'm getting the full 50 cfm even though I have a bit of negative pressure in the case and some flow resistance.

Here's a feeble attempt at a bmp of the fan setup. the fans are red, the 8045 is the grey block, and the duct is blueish. airflow is indicated by arrows.

Unfortunately my current setup won't do that. I've got to have a 90 degree bend in the duct in order to push the air out of the back of the case. For now I don't have the tools necessary to mod the case.

So this is why you have 2 fans;

Yeah, I'm no artist as you can see. I also haven't gotten the nack of getting pictures to appear in the post apparently.

Nihili,

I thought the Alphas and Swiftys were supposed to have the fans blowing into the sink, not sucking. Have you tried the fan blowing?

okay I understand. I actually have a 92mm fan blowing in under the p/s and the 53cfm 80mm blowing up off it. I was just fooling around one day and I found that it keeps my duron nice and cool!

Swifty's blow, Alpha's suck.

This case and duct setup seems to perfom best exhausting off the sink. At least that's how it worked with the thermoengine. I haven't done a comparison with the 8045 yet. I'm waiting for the ASII to cure a bit. After a few days I'll try it running the other direction.

nihili , have you tried ocing futher yet?

With my duron -

stock hsf - 800@1050 w/1.95v
Swifted MCX370 - 800@1058 w/1.95v
Thermalright sk6 - 800@1064 w/1.95v

Each time the temp decreased the oc increased:).

Haven't tried it yet, but that's the plan. I figured I'd let it sit for a day and get used to itself.
