thats fake. normal picture with white... globs to simulate hdr.
If thats real than please help us all... that is WAY to much HDR... looks rediculous if it is real. Though probably fake... they havent even released Episode 3 yet.
Wow that's more hdr than Far Cry. I'm so glad that kind of hdr was short lived.
real life doesn't have that much HDR!

Fake,
why?
The Half Life 2 episode (1-3) are considered Half Life 3. Also as of now there are no plans to continue the story after Episode 3. Valve has said a number of times that Episode will tie up all the loose ends.
Now it is possible that a "Half Life 3" (in essences HL4) would be released in a similar manor to HL2, where it is a completely different setting but same story arc. This would be quite a few years after Half Life 2 Episode 3 though.

But Doug Lombardi said "We haven’t announced anything specific, but Half-Life won’t end at Episode Three – hang on to your crowbars!"

While it doesn't confirm HL3, it is something interesting. I think you are right however in that HL3 will probably be in the same arc but in a different setting.

If HL2 EP1-3 were meant to be HL3, it would be called HL3. Don't be silly. :p
But I understand what they were trying to say. They didn't want to make gamers wait 6 years for HL3 like they did with HL2, so they are tiding us over with some episodic content that doesn't require a whole new engine (which I assume HL3 will). These episodes take minimal work compared to the endeavor that was HL2. It's kinda like how HL1:Blue Shift came out to keep people busy.
Mark my words, there will be a box in a store one day with the words "Half Life 3" on it.

is episode 3 supposed to be a short mini-sode like the other episodes or are we looking at a full game like HL2 to "wrap things up"??
one thing that bugs me in modern science fiction is that people are willing to present intriguing questions that, in the end, have no real valid answers. i fear that LOST is like this. i hope that HL is actually going to answer things rather than just leave you with vague speculation that lends you to make only one conclusion: there were no answers to begin with

Episode 3, or "HL2.3" will wrap up this story. Half Life 3 (whenever it comes out) will be a full game on a new engine.

Well let us remember too that as the episode keep coming out more and more things are added into the source Engine. In EP1(/lost coast) it was true HDR, and improved AI (Alyx). In episode 2 it was pre-rendered "Hollywood" physics, much improved vehicle's and mutli-thread support, in addition to the improved code for open out door landscape.
Also throughout all the episode valve has vastly improved the pre-caching of files and file loaded so that the game is smother (no studier) and less load times.
@Leviathan41, you are correct Episode 3 will not be the last Half Life, but I meant the end of this current story about City 17, and the combine. The story of Gordon Freedman is not over though, which you pointed out. I'm glad it isn't over:)

Yeah I agree, and I'm with you on that one. I can't wait to play Half-Life in a different environment, I remember playing HL2 for the first time, wow, what an experience. If a few years down the road HL3 comes anywhere close to that, I will be pleased. :D

Regardless of the HDR level, I can't see that picture being HL3 due to setting alone. No matter what they do with HL I cannot see the universe suddenly picking itself back togethor to the point of Gordon freemen being in a nice suburban enviroment that is all happy.
I think we still have a good long while to wait before HL3

That just looks ridiculously bad. Maybe if I had just woken up in the middle of the day and walked outside with my eyes closed, then opened them, that might be slightly realistic.

If we ever see anything after HL2:EP3 it will be a long time coming and on a new engine.
However I would like Valve to remake HL. I know they already have, but I mean with the HL2 or better engine.

HL:S is on the Source engine, but it doesn't do much for it. They didn't remake the game, which I agree they should. They remake classic movies all the time and usually butcher them, no reason Valve couldn't make a mint on a proper HL remake.

HLS was a proof of concept to show that HL mods could be easily ported to the source engine.

So far this appears to be the only concept art released for Ep3 so far: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/07/11/half-life-2-episode-3-first-image/

If that pic is real I think its amazing! Looks real, that'll take a shot at my graphics engine. The lighting and such seems fit to a certain view of the area.
HL3 = DX11, VS5 :) Release date of approx... October, 2012. EP3 will be released Sometime between now and Christmas, October is likely.

Do you have a source? It is July and we have heard nothing. I wouldn't bank on EP3 being released this year. You also left us a 6 months window :p
But it would kick if it was released this year, I've been waiting to see the rest of the story.

yup, i would say fake image, just like that one that was going around in that underground subway tunnel under construction crap.
real life doesn't have that much HDR! no, but it does after some post processing.

I have a source, but I obviously can name them haha other wise, that would be no fun.
The pictures real, but its got too much HDR going on. They need to tone it down a bit.

It's been in the making for a while now. No real updates in about a year though...
The people on the forums still say the developers are plugging along, working to get it done and make it look good so we'll see what happens. I want to play it now and see how it is though. :p

The only drawback there is that it isn't Valve remaking it. While it does look good, and I hope it does get finished sometime soon [doubtful in my mind], I'd have to agree with Vinny that I'd like to see Valve remake it. It is their creation afterall :)

The remake valve did is horrible IMO. If you watch the videos for Black Mesa Source, their actually re-doing all the levels with items from the HL2 engine instead of just re-skinning everything with HL2 textures, but still technically being HL1.
