Be prepared for really unprofessional terminology, as that I'm doing this completely from memory and with no knowledge of the actual 4850 architecture.

Long and short, when I removed the stock HSF there were the standard set of ram chips (8 of em) which I bought some nice little swiftech heatsinks for. However, there was also thermal padding on the HSF over other little... blocky... things... on the far end of the card, what looked like... 8 I think? little black thingys in two sets of four rows. (god my description sucks, but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.)

Do I need to do anything for these things? get more heatsinks ect? and if so, what?

Edit:
AHA, on the 50th page of google, ONE good picture.

on the right side, those things they put the silver heat sinks over, and the row next to them.

Yep, you should sink them as well.

Those are quite likely the MOSFETs for power regulation, and just as chevro1et mentioned, you need to sink 'em.

There are sets for those as well for example this from swiftech. LINK (http://swiftech.com/products/mc21.asp)

Arglebargle... I already bought an 8 set of overly expensive heatsinks for my ram ;_; Is there any way I could fabricate something myself that would be effective enough?

You can try contacting this guy to see if he's still selling ramsinks. He had a classified ad a while back and I bought some from him at a cheap price. $1 per ramsink. :O Just send him an e-mail to see if he's still selling them.

LOL i believe his name is Albuquerque (like albu-querky)...laughed pretty hard at arglebargle

are you able to fabricate something that small out of said materials (copper/aluminum) easily? my guess would be that it is not so easy.

HAHAHA I didn't even notice that, arglebargle is just my -facepalm- expression, nice coincidence. I'm considering literally chopping a chunk off of a stock heatsink or something, but bleh... That's my best solution so far.

ASUS disagrees (http://www.overclock.net/hardware-news/347038-vr-zone-asus-hd4850-1gb-glaciator.html).

So do I.

I guess the question is will it hurt to cover them? No.

Allright, I did the standard ghetto-sink of thermal adhesive+staples for the short run, nothings bugging up but it's quite hot to the touch. Anyone have more insight than just a 'maybe?"

Thanks much.

I would say to put sinks on them just to be safe. I put an Accelero S1 Rev 2 on one of my 4850s, and the VRM sinks that came with it don't fit my card. Everything runs fine and temp sensors aren't reporting anything excessive, but the VRM area is very hot to touch (not hot enough to burn me, but getting quite close). Some sinks there will definitely extend the life of your card (power circuitry is rather important) and very likely allow you better overclocking. I ordered a bunch of VRM sinks and some lower profile (also better looking) RAM sinks from FrozenCPU.com, and some thermal tape from Best Byte to attach them with.

Hahaha, my solution to my ramsinks being too high? Let's just say now they look like strange spiders. Or like they melted. Either or, they work very nicely and fit under my WC barbs ^^
Hmm, allright, I'll put some money down for some sinks. I need to pick up some stuff online anyway, extra tubing, a bleed port, ect. Might as well do that all when I get enough money to grab my sound card too...
