I guess they did it a day or two ago but I see the MSRP of the GTX280 has gone down again. It went down another $50 to $449.99, $200 less than the price they released it at.
I also see the MSRP for the 9800gtx+ is lower than it was expected to be, EVGA has it listed at $199.99 but they don't have it in stock, it is listed as a pre-order. They still have the 9800gtx listed at $329.99 but it was supposed to be dropped to $20 less than the newer, faster, 9800gtx+.
It looks like a good time to buy some graphics cards if you can find some good rebates.
there is was a bfg 9800gtx for $149 p.m. me if anyone wants this info as it is after MIR of 50 bux...
but from a good vendor to say the least.
I wonder if Nvidia is getting close to cost on its 280's. If so, they sure had a huge markup on them when released..

Those 9800GTX+ cards are looking real tempting... I just may have to upgrade my main box with one of those. :D

Aaargh, the cheapest GTX280 card here in Greece is the Asus one at 650$ (~410 euros)... :(

for main rig, I would also consider 9800GTX/+, but for a pure folding farm, the power draw over 8800GT might not be worth it tho....

btw, how fast does 9800GTX/+ fold? mid-high 5k??
6k afaik
6k is about normal I think so you get 1k more then a 8800 and pertty sure this is close to stock gpu not stock systems tho...

but according to anandtech's chart, under full load, a single 9800GTX+ use the same amount of power as 2x8800GT SLI!! (and cost almost 2x too!)

That's exactly what I'm thinking... main rig, I like to UT3 on occasion (more here recently) and I'd like the extra fps.
Otherwise, (as I've been saying since all this nVidia craze got started (http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=5682012&postcount=33)) the 9800GTX or even GTX+ is not going to be the PPD/watt leader. I believe the 8800GT/GTS will still rule the roost.
true but being a single card user like myself I wanted alittle better gaming and ppd at the same time :D
seeing as they cost about the same I guess it would really depend on the power used. I'm not one to really study wattage used...

I would think that we would see some more killer deals on the 8800gt now that the 9800gtx+ is coming out. Retailers are going to want to start selling off their stock before nobody wants to buy them anymore.

...except Folders. ;)
This competition is great, my friend just picked up a 9800GTX for $150. Awesome.

What's the folding performance of the 260 compared to the 9800gtx? I saw the 260 is down to $299.

There is a killer deal posted on the Anandtech forum right now, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=2210536&enterthread=y. If you read the whole thread you'll see the EVGA gtx260 is $269.99 and the EVGA gtx260 SC is $279.99 and by using the unlisted rebate the final price for each shipped would be $239.99 and $249.99. Those are really good deals (and my personal favorite brand) but the question is how do you know they won't be even lower in two weeks?
Oh, and two tips on buying from EVGA. They will honor two rebates for the same graphics cards so you can run them in SLI, they just request you send each request in a seperate envelope. Also they have an EAR program, advanced RMA, which if you purchase it when you register your card (have to register within 30 days to obtain the lifetime warranty) you will get for half price. For $7.99 if there is a problem with the card you just request an RMA, within about three business days they will ship out the replacement via UPS ground and include a pre-paid return shipping label. For a bit more you can get two day or next day UPS though it will still take the same 2 or 3 days to process the request and ship your replacement. I believe the EAR is only available through the US office and I don't recommend buying from EVGA if you live in Europe, they have horrible customer service at the German office.
Quick edit to add the EAR is only good for the card purchased for, so if you need it replaced in a year you would have to purchase another EAR for the replacement if you want it for that card. If there is a problem within 30 days of purchase the EAR is supposed to carry over to it's replacement, though.

A 280 wouldn't cost anymore to manufacture than an 8800. Of COURSE they have a huge markup. Just like those DVD movies you buy for 15 to 20 bucks a pop... then you can get the same ones later on that year for like 5 or six bucks. The discs themselves (Including all printed materials) only cost about 50 cents to make.

Hey, I'm one of several around here that would gladly purchase here and ship to you, all you have to do is ask!
The price cuts are still amazing me, slowly but surely they're all coming down down down.
And lol @ cw823. I live in NY so I'm starting to have people ship me stuff so I don't pay tax on it hahaha. I just spent $700 on newegg and I had it shipped to a friend in Vermont so that he could bounce it down to me. Takes more time, sure, but I saved $50. Stupid new governor.

(and cost almost 2x too!)I find that very strange considering that these cards are supposed to take advantage of a smaller die process. Maybe they will OC well. For someone looking to squeeze every last PPD out of a box and not wanting to spend on a GT200 card, I think they are still appealing cards.
