Multiple players through router <ie RTCW>

I was wondering, I tried connecting to a server with my room mate on RTCW last night and it didnt seem to want to connect a second computer. I suspect its because we are using the same IP due to being behind the same router on the cable modem. Is there any way around this or were we just not getting enough bandwidth etc and it does work?

linksys with 4 port 10/100 switch

Is it the same copy of the game? Because if it is then you can't connect to the same server when you have the same product number. A common security feature.
