80 PS3 Question

Alrighty, I've finally set up my 80Gb PS3. I did notice something weird. When I checked for free space, it showed 60GB / 74GB. I can understand the 74GB stock disc space (instead of the so call 80Gb); however, what happen to the rest of the 14 GB?? Was it because of the V2.41 update?? :bang head

I think they reserve it for something, my 60gb is the same way.

Maybe the Sony OS takes up 14GB. So, what about this 40Gb version? Does it mean they only have 26 left at stock?

that's weird, must be something with the new units because my 1st gen 60gb didnt have a random 14gb missing and i even split the drive for ydl(bad choice)

What could you possibly install onto Linux that would need that much space? Especially on the PS3...

i mistyped that, i only gave it 20gb, and ive never used it but i dont wanna format and have to re-download everything to get the full 60 back

Redownload what? You could backup all your save games in about ten minutes. Then you could reinstall a game or two a day... starting with the one you're actually playing.

As far as downloads... there's only game updates and a handful of map packs as far as I know. Just reformat. (Unless you have a lot of movies, music and whatnot.)

re-download 15 or so games and restore the photos/music i have on it isnt worth my time when i'm not begging for free space.

Technically speaking, the 80Gb comes free with MGS4, even though they call it a bundle.

Just watch out deals for the 40Gb version. Sometimes retailers (like circuitcity, meijer...etc) will include movies, games, accessories (additional controller and/or remote control), for free when you buy the 40gb from them.

Sony will phase out the 40 gb version, replace them with the 80 gb and still sell them at the $399. It is my understanding that the new 80gb version will still use the same SKU as the 40gb, which means no backwards compatibility to PS2 games. I'm sure retailers will add on bundles to the 40gb in order to clear their inventory for the newer 80gb version.

I just checked. My PS3 is the 80Gb MGS4 version. There is a blu-ray demo disc that came with it, and it comes with a code to dl a free game call PAIN.
