View Full Version : Wake on LAN
I'm looking for a decent Wake on LAN utility that will be able to wake up my media server on my local network. Any suggestions for some decent ones?

Do you want to do this remotely (from the internet), cron based, or from another pc on the lan?
WOL that I have used is usually in the router because the server was told to go to sleep at a specified time and the router then has another cron to wake it up. You could set this up to go when data is trying to contact the router or you could set it up via another server, there are literly a dozen ways to work out a solution for this problem.
I think a little bit more information is required, hopefully someone else in the community can help too.

Hi Fuzz Bunny,
Thanks for the reply, basically the media server is on my LAN. I use the media server to not only stream all media to my house but also for backup purposes. I basically would like the server to wake up when ever i browse to it or try to access it from my PC. The server is set to hibernate after 10 minutes of no activity to save on power bills as my 850W gaming rig already pushes the price up. I have it so it wake ups by a WOL magic packet but would also like it to wake up when i try and access data on it.
Also another thing i dont know if you could help with, it is set to hibernate after 10 minutes and i use it to stream media to my PS3, yesterday i was watching a HD Movie from my media server on my PS3 streaming through the network when it went into hibernate, surely it shouldn't go into hibernate when there is network activity? Is there anyway i can stop this? My media server is running XP Pro.
