View Full Version : Why are Game Industry Types stereotypical Losers?

Either you've got the rotund, Jeff Gershman, "Comic Book Guy" pitch man... or you've got somebody that like THIS GUY:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/07/18/live-demo-valkyria-chronicles-ps3-exclusive-srpg/

Why is that? And why is it ESPECIALLY the console game industry? You get some fairly average computer geeks when PC gaming is concerned... but any executive in the Gaming industry (barring official Spokesmen/women of course) has to be some sort of circus freak.

Why?

Are you seriously that superficial? Wow.

Why do their appearances matter?

Edit: They obviously aren't losers, considering their making video games that will probably sell hundreds of thousands of copies. What have you done in the past few years to compare?

It's not just their appearances I'm talking about. (That's why I posted a VIDEO instead of a picture.) It's the fact that these guys are complete tools. And what have I done in the past few years to compare? You can't really compare anything that I've done in the past few years with mediocrity. These aren't the people that MADE the damned games. They're the people that were hired to PUSH the games.

You just wait until I find you that Killzone 2 pic...

This has never really been an issue before this console generation, because they only shoved these annoying PR people on you in magazine quotes. Now these douches are coming through in stereo.

Every company has ONE straight guy (who's usually completely insane like Peter Moore, Jack Tretton, or... "French-nam Nintendo Guy") and a bunch of THESE guys.

He isn't even that bad looking.

It's not just his look. See above.

Alright, I can appreciate and somewhat understand it. Could you please elaborate on your assumption that these guys are tools? I only ask this because from the inital post, it seemed like you were judging them solely on appearance (comparing Girschman to the "comic book man", or calling them "circus freaks".). I think this is where I became unsure of this threads objective.

It is their job to represent the game, and because video is a popular media, there is no reason why these guys shouldn't be representing the game and the developers on this expansive media that can reach more people than magazine quotes possibly can(run on sentence my bad).

I'm not saying they shouldn't use video to represent their products... on the contrary... it's nice to have video: OF THE GAME... not these guys.

That's what I was getting at. It's like these guys have become "co-stars" or some nonsense. I shouldn't even know what the hell Jeff Gertsman looks like. (I never knew what Dan "Shoe" Shu from EGM looked like... I have no idea what Sushi X looks like...) These guys shouldn't have any screen time AT ALL.

And it kills me to want to watch a preview for something like Soul Calibur or Killzone and see like 80% of the screen time taken up by hipster burnouts like the above or that really horrible Killzone 2 promo guy... (I SWEAR I'm going to find you that video. It's gotta be in my Firefox History.

Yeah... I probably could've worded the first post better (HEY i was up until 3am watching batman and didn't get home until 10 :) ) but the Killzone 2 video would've been self-explanatory. I wouldn't have had to say ANYTHING.

EDIT: HERE we go:

Rainless this thread is ridiculous even for you.

Ohhhhh no. You don't even want to IMAGINE what ridiculous for me is...

But I've actually wanted to comment on this for a very long time. I've let a hell of a lot of things slide. But the Killzone 2 guy and THIS guy were the straw that broke the camel's back.

Just think about it: "6 minutes of Killzone 2 footage!" That's what they advertise. So you're thinking "AWESOME!" Four of those minutes is one of these two guys.

When you first see the link you bring your buddy around and say "THIS is why I play video games."

Two minutes into it, your buddy says "This is why I DON'T play video games."

If you're got a counter-argument as to why we should see less game and more of these guys (and this phenomena is really only in the past couple of years) then I'd love to hear it.

But just calling my thread useless is pointless.

I don't see the big deal tbh, it's the same with almost every product in the world. Somebody has to present it, I personally don't care who, as long they are speaking relevantly about said product. Of course they aren't going to show you a movie length feature of the game they want to tease you. I'm not going to call your thread trivial or pointless, it simply doesn't speak to me on the same level.

Well I know somebody has to present it... but they don't have to be ON SCREEN!

Why was Mr. Sideburn/Goatee onscreen? What purpose did that serve? He could've said the exact same stuff offscreen. Why cut back to him... and the even less relevent person interviewing him who gets cut off the frame? I mean this isn't The Angry Video Game Nerd... him I could understand.

Take Zero Punctuation for example... you never see THAT guy (unless he fell behind and didn't animate anything that week... then you see him) and it works just fine. His work speaks for itself. Killzone 2 doesn't need four minutes of "This is the guy presenting Killzone 2 to you..."

Maybe I'm just not explaining it right... I am still pretty tired and haven't eaten anything today.

I'm going to rest-up, eat-up, and try this again later... Batman threw me off my rhythm.

I didn't mind the Killzone 2 guy really. He was wanting to make sure we knew it was a gritty world a bit much for my tastes, but other than that it seemed bearable enough.

If you had made your point with those mental midgets who did Nintendo's E3 presentation I would have emphatically agreed with you though.

*Edit: Ah I see where you are going. They should be able to just show footage with the guy talking over the action like in the Diablo 3 preview, but maybe the producers want you to connect with the game creators enough so you don't think they are just disembodied voices that you can steal the game from?? Or maybe they want to feel like an actual show that interviews people instead of just a game clips show. Who knows?

Now you got it! I was wondering how many more ways I could possibly explain it. :)

I don't think he's even one of the game creators. But even if he is... the use voice over all the time in game videos. There's absolutely no reason to show these guys. They aren't celebrities... they aren't the producers of the game. That's not Miyamoto sitting up there with a translator... that's not... whatever the Metal Gear Solid guy's name is.

And even if it was Miyamoto or the other guy... they'd be doing an INTERVIEW with them... and maybe have some footage of a game in the background... not presenting a game and having footage of some miscellaneous loser in the foreground.

God...When i watch that Killzone 2 video, the guy on the left for some reason reminds me of a young Reggie Fils-Aimé!!!! ( the nintendo spokesman. )

I agree, when showing demo's, and gameplay footage, its about the game. We HONESTLY don't care about the commentator. If they actually have the producer, or a developer or something then that's fine.

The only people i really care for is Adam sessler, Morgan Webb ( she's hot...but she's not THAT hot. But it is nice to see a good looking woman who plays games ), and there MAY be one or two other people. But other than that...i couldn't care less.

But in the same token, i never really noticed. I never let this kind of thing bother me. I let sh*tty gameplay video's bother me, I let bad game/console idea's bother me. But not the commentator.

I agree with rainless here :) Who gives a flying monkey turd about the commentator if they aren't involved in the development of the game... I want to see the game, not the loser. If it's the person who wrote the script, one of the programmers, or someone somehow relevant to the game, having them in the video doing some sort of interview is fine. Spending half or more of the video time watching some random guy is NOT cool.

That was part of the joke haha.

Having not beaten MGS3 and even played MGS4 (I don't have a PS3 :bang head), my SN is fairly unworthy...

That said once I do get myself a PS3 and such (you know, with the money I'm not making at that job I don't have) I'll definitely be playing MGO like crack. And when the new ZoE comes out, I'll definitely be picking that up as well.

Nooo... Was too-tired-to-sleep and had lots of better things to do with his time but didn't have the energy to do any of them. So decided to create a thread that would be sure to lure in someone so Obsessive/compulsive that he bought a damned PHYSX CARD! ("Way of the future man!") :p

Rainless wins the thread.

Killzone 2 looks like rubbish, just another generic FPS. Can't believe that tool actually brought up ragdoll physics as a GOOD thing. This is 2008. Blech.

If they want to sell that piece of trash, they need to show some sorority chicks sitting around in panties playing it. Or something. I dunno.
