View Full Version : is this a memory problem?

been running my rig oc for a few days and all has been good. a full 24h orthos/prime stable clock, with no real signs of failure.
restarted my computer today and failed to fully run memory testing at post before restarting and switching off manual clock speed settings, putting it back to stock speeds.
resumed to change the settings back to the OC status, and still fail to make memory testing in post.
lags at 'Mem' from 'Memory Testing' until it finally cuts out and reboots.
i am running OCZ Reaper RAM 1066MHz at UNDER rated speeds 944MHz to be exact. tried relaxing the timings which did jack.
can now only boot at stock levels......bummer!
any ideas?
see if memtest86+ shows any errors.if it does head over here

and they will help you get your rma set up.

i couldn't make it past post to even get into memtest at the speeds i was running.....
have since played around a bit.
i was running Dual Channel in slots 2 and 4
1 stick worked in 2, and would also work in slot 4, but not together.
working all fine, Dual Channel in 1 and 3 for some reason, will run memtest overnight though to see if any problems come up

ok - seems as though i might have a problem.
same as before, but i've found, each time i need to restart my computer, the problem happens again,
i fiddle around with the RAM, swapping spots and such, fixes itself, until i need to restart my computer.
do you guys think its a RAM problem, or a MOBO issue? or something else
mine has done that a few times and when i pull the bios battery and reset all from stock to OC again it all works well. who knows mayb its a faulty system mayb it just gets confused. mayb it was a bad shutdown.
imo pull the bat start again same settings and see what happens

did that a week or two ago when it originally did it.
does bugger all. the only way i can load up my system OC'ed is when i play around with the memory and the slots.......
UPDATE - even when loading at STOCK levels, it seems to hang a touch at Memory Testing, before kicking into life......
i really should run MemTest tonight!

are your RAM voltages ok? my computer doesnt like booting if the voltages are less that 1.8, after resetting the bios it sets them back to 1.4.

stock ram is 1.8 i believe....
the reaper i have is rated at 533MHz at 2.1V. i'm running 472 at 2.1V. is overvolting going to cause instability like this?
even loosening the timings, should be stable at 5,5,5,15. won't work at 6,6,6,18.....

I wouldnt have thought 0.3v more would do any harm, but maybe the combination of more volts and lower running speeds is having a negative effect?
Can you change the memory divider to get the ram running at the recommended speed?
Otherwise have you tried testing each stick individually?

i can only change the memory divider to run at an OC speed (1133MHz)
each stick work individually......but both stick will work once in DC.
i then have to start the system with one stick in SC. reset the settings and reboot with the 2 stick in DC
it will then proceed to boot properly

can you try lowering the FSB speed slightly to allow the sticks to run at there recommended speed?
sorry if im already going through what you have already done, im just trying to eliminate possible problems

i don't mind trying different options.......havn't tried that one yet though

I think this is going to be a case of trial and error to find the fault.
It does seem strange that both sticks work individually.
I also see that you are running a lot of HDD's, could you unplug some, say only leave the one with your os on plugged in, as it may be that they are consuming a lot of power. It sounds like a voltage problem (but i may be completely wrong!)

yeh - failed on the FSB matching rated......
gonna run memtest overnight to see if some errors show up

MemTest good for 24 cycles......
ran today for a test with my old OCZ Platinum PC-6400 RAM.....worked fine first boot (OCed at 950MHz might i add), but failed on the second attempt. just like with the reaper.
i'm buggered if i know what the problem is - thinking MB or SOMETHING............ARGH
his ram is rated to run at 1066 (533 FSB with a 2 divider) edit was thinking of my bros 1150 ram :P
I had that issue with my ram and the thing that did fix it was i left the timings on auto and it started doing this. when i manualy set them to 4,4,4,15 it workd no worries. that reaper ram is 5,5,5,15 or sumtin yea?
grumpy_dog666
07-23-08, 07:31 PM
yes - 5,5,5,15 at 533....and its set on that....should do better on the slower FSB....4,4,4,15 on a 400.
total spanner in the work - WILL NOT boot at overclocked settings more than once on any RAM config. either SINGLE DIMM or Dual Channel.
TIM - FIND ME A NEW Mobo ($200 limit)......off too scorp tonight!
