You guys are saying go with the 1600+ for $114, but why not spend an extra 14$ for the 1700+ or even an extra 50$ for the 1800+?

eh?

i was in the same bout about 2 weeks ago. i went with the 1600 because its the best overclocker. i had mine at 1743 stable and thats with the multiplier locked.

If you are overclocking what is the point in buying the more $$$ chip if it's the same chip as the cheap chip with a lower defualt multiplier?

It was running on an asus board at 166 with multipliers at 10.5. i was using watercooling, but ihad to reset the waterblock and when i did i didn't notice that the block wasn't on all the way so it fried the chip:( i sent it back last week and ill be getting my new one tomarrow. let me see if i can dig up the benchmarks...i found it in one off my old threads right here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55049)
