just an old dell 17in lcd

1024 x 768

maybe i should also upgrade the lcd any recommendation?

Go for a 1680x1050 20-22" screen made by LG, Dell or Samsung, you can't go far wrong and they're not too expensive. With this kind of screen I would recommend an ATI 4870 or GTX 260 (the ATI card is faster).

If you're going for a 1280x1024 or 1440x900 panel then go for a 9800GTX or 4850.

I think that even at 1680x1050, the HD 4850 is enough, unless you want to go overboard and spend more than you have to...

At 1024 x 768, an ATI 4850 will do any game you want, plus its a very cheap card, for being so powerful, around 199 or less.

4850 or 9800GTX+ (The 9800GTX+ is different (better) from the 9800GTX)

Yeah you should get a 19-22" LCD to go with that upgrade, it will make a big difference.

In terms of video card, a 4850 or 9800GTX+ should suffice.

lol at 1024x768 an X1950 Pro would do. The 4850 brings 1680x1050 and higher + AA performance to the masses, way overkill for 1024x768.

I'd suggest getting a new LCD if you have the funds, would go great with that new system of yours. Something like a 20" or 22" LCD are great, the most common resolution for these is 1680x1050.

Then I'd recommend getting either a 4850 or 4870 depending on your budget.

If you end up sticking with your current LCD, any decent card from the last generation will be more then enough, 9600GT or 3870 for about $110 come to mind.
