My win 98SE is running in MS-DOS compatibility mode....and i don;t know how it got there, and I need to re-instal windoze anyways, but my cd rom drives dissapeared too
How do I get everything working "normally" again?
thanks in advance :)

to be honest with you, I haven't ran 98SE in so long, I've forgotten...been with 2K, and now XP, for almost 2 years...but I'm sure a re-install, which you had planned to do anyway, will fix the problem...they usually do!! :D

If you're on a VIA chipset board, reinstalling the 4-in-1s always fixed that for me.

Usually any reinstalling any chipset or controller drivers will fix that problem.

How long has Windows been installed for?

I noticed that when Windows was installed for more than 4-6 months the registry started corrupting and lead to a bad operating system and killed everything.

It started to eat hard drive space by itself...
Try a clean install if you can.

do you have enough room on your hdd to copy the win98cd on to it, in a seperate partition? then you can format your original partition, and install from the second partition. You can always use Partition Magic to merge the 2 partitions later...I know this isn't the best way of doing things, and it certainly doesn't give you the answers you were looking for, but it is a way to fix it...

If you use the 98 boot disk you will be able to install with the cd. I would format the drive and make a file, then copy the win98 file from the cd to it and run setup from there then windows will never ask for the cd again and next time something like this happens you can reinstall windows over the top of the old one and keep all your files and settings.

Partition magic is commercially available at most computer retail stores.
