What would be your first guess to a computer that runs slow and locks up all the time?
The reason I ask is my friend has an older Compaq (I know, lol) Presario k62 350-450mhz (not sure) and it locks up all the time, doing anything.
He said the computer has either 32 or 64 mb or memory.
I was guessing it could be a memory problem since he isn't getting any weird error messages or anything.
What do you guys think?
Thanks
If hes running the default operating system that came with his Compaq thats one as my friends Compaq also had lock up problems.
Adding more ram will help as 64 is too minimal for today's technology. Wait for those memory prices to drop and then buy him an addition 256 or something. The extra ram has really good effects on the older computer..

He is running Widows 98 and his memory can go as high as 384mb (crazy huh), but that should be plenty for what he does. I think he will probably get the memory anyways, because I told him the same thing, 64mb is way to little these days.
The windows itself can be a problem as the windows is installed with alot of Compaq crap.
My friends system was a P3 650 Compaq, it ran Windows like my dad does on his P-166 it was sad and there was temporary lock ups.
I would recommend a format but I just didn't want to go through all the frustration of doing it for him as I'm like his CPU guy..

Yep, I told my friend he should do a "fdisk" format instead of the "quik restore" format feature that Compaq provides. All the quik restore does is re-install all of that needless crap back on the machine.
