View Full Version : nitteo RETOOLING the Farm
Sorry guys, I am going to start breaking down rigs today. I am selling off most parts to start a GPU Farm instead. I have no more space to place rigs, so condensing them into 4xGPU rigs is more convenient for me.
Be back in a few weeks time, hopefully sooner... better, stronger, new and improved nitteo.

I guess chasr better run while he has the chance :D
Good luck! I've been planning on doing something like this as well. I just picked up an extra video card and an open box MSI board with 4 16X wide slots (Too bad I waited until they went up instead of when they were $80). Once I get it set up, I'll start trying to sell off stuff to keep the upgrading. I think I've got enough junk to set up 2 4X GPU2 boxes.

I am new to the scene but still feel I am correct in saying:
cue: the times they are a changin'....
@Nitteo, you're full of surprises. Each seems more incredible than the last one. :)
@PaulD, you're absolutely right about that. My ears are becoming quite calloused since the release of all these new high-production FAH clients - especially the new GPU client.
And :welcome: to the team and forum! :D
I'll temporarily suspend my uncontrolled spending while nitteo retools, after I recieve the 3 8800 GTSs, the 8800 GT, the Q9450 ....

Why not run half SMP & half GPU. If the GPU points get changed, you'll be in a world of hurt.
will you be selling your stuff here in the classifieds?

Hehe, yea. You're retooling means a bunch of people got spanky new quads. You had quite a few little gems there nitteo. You'll be happy to know that the one I bought will be going into a new folding machine.

As of late, I've been contemplating a farm "retool" myself; word is out that SoCal Edison is seeking a 25-30% rate hike. That would mean well over $110 monthly increase...
Not gonna happen, I've been divorced too many times, not going for another.
I'm not going to attempt multiple GPU cards & clients(not now anyways) but I may get 2 more video cards, run a single GPU + 2 VMs. I would let the Mac Mini continue folding(such a low wattage rig!), and run (3) [GPU + 2 VM rigs] full time.
I'm just not ready to go through another cycle of parting part and selling off rigs, some of which are less than six months old. I'll probably keep the remaining quad rigs for part-time folding, maybe on weekends only, or just run full time one week a month...
I'm hedging bets and doing just as fishy says, SMP+GPU. I have space for about 15 more GPUs without building another rig, but I'm building two quads anyway. I'd still be really hurt if points were adjusted or the work returned wasn't valid, ala GPU1, and the client discontinued.

Ditto that... I'm in the market for another Q6600 G0. :)

GPU2 isn't going anywhere. It already is doing 3.5x the science of every other OS combined (not including PS3).
I agree 100% with Nitteo's decision on this one. SMP is the dying client.
We need consumer Cell Processors :D

Yeah saw all that goodness that Nitteo has on the classies and thought, Dam wish I was a bit better off financially myself, would certainly grab a quad at those prices,,,
Fold On!!!

I agree 100% with Nitteo's decision on this one. SMP is the dying client.
Vijay has stated that GPU's can only do a few forms of computations that they need, but they do them very fast. CPU's are still more flexible in the type of science they can do. Using GPU's simply offload (or limit) that type of work from running them on CPU's since this is much faster on a GPU.
It seems to me that as they start to need more CPU based computations done they will either lower the GPU points per WU or raise (think bonus WU's) the points on the uni and smp client side.
I say right now it is best to keep a good mix of SMP and GPU as Stanford will need a mix of both and I'm sure will adjust the points to reflect that.
A few things have led me to switch over to GPU2 farming:
1) Q6600s are still selling for $150, which is a good price. If any lower I would have probably stuck with them.
2) I hired more employees and space is a premium. Instead of having 15 DEDICATED Quads Rigs I can squeeze the same PPD into 4 rigs. Easier to handle/maintain...
And yes I am aware that GPU2 Points might be adjusted, but if it does, then I will still fold with them. I am about done with hardware investment. This is it for me, especially since my Stocks have taken a 30% nosedive since the start of the year.:(
