ok mods, i apologize in advance if this is in the wrong area. tell you the truth, i can't think of where i should put this.

well i've been having a problem. just in the past couple of days my computer has been freezing up at random times. its not even when i've been doing heavy load stuff, just chatting and surfing the boards.

the first time i remember this happening was on saturday night or sunday morning (can't remember for sure). i remember i upgraded to windows SP2 and had to do multiple reboots. i tried to get back to the modified win2k startup screen that i had by hacking the NTOSKRNL file with a resource hacker (since SP2 replaced the original). i had done it before, but it didn't work this time. but i replaced the modified file with the original (which i made a copy of). i still don't know why it didn't work, but i'm wondering if any of the upgrading or tinkering could have made this happen.

so if anyone has any idea why this could be happening could you please shoot a response my way? thanks in advance.

please move this if its in the wrong place mods, and i'm sorry to make your job any harder than it has to be, since i'm hardly a newbie around here.

well....if you really can't figure out a good area...post it in the General Hardware forum. Most of the good techs sit there waiting for new posts! LOL

sounds like you got a bad patch....and since you can't remove it....I'd guess a reinstall. Have you tried downloading SP2 again and installing it over? (actually downloading the exe)

By chance, have you moved your machine or bumped in to it? Something that may have caused a connection to become loose?

Have you monitored the voltages on the PSU?

just stuff off the top of my head...........

a good guess would be the last thing you did right before your problem--sp2, coud be a bad instal of your page file, which would mean a temp page file is in place, this happens with a bad spt instal at times but usually results in overall system slowdown.

you really should try and reinstall your SP, or ever your 2k, but im just guessing cause u have been "hacking" your system

its not unsafe. go to http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00021.asp and look at their tutorial on changing your windows2k boot screen.

later on i'll try and reinstall the SP2 and see if it helps me any.

i was trying to imply that when you start to hack or use 3rd party mods to your MS system files there is also the potential for trouble--thats why you always see disclaimers(that site is loaded with them)

and then you go and apply an MS patch/update
onto those same files, a patch which is coded based on those system files, which you have since altered
you can expect problems--

looking at that site and what u have done and the problems you now have I would say that yes that hack is unsafe

i also noticed that the site states that the hack dosent work with SP2

if you want to change your boot screen just add the /SOS switch after fastdetect in your boot.ini file ---safe and informative

of course i OC and have burned up many systems through the years, so who am i to talk?

i didn't even realize that i couldn't have the new boot screen with SP2. that explains why i couldn't set it back to how it was. i'm about to reformat anyways so i won't upgrade next time. it didn't do anything that i can tell anyways.

I modded mine no problem with SP2. Had to figure out a slight workaround to do it, but it worked.

After the 10 seconds of satisfaction it gave me I changed it back though.

Your SP2 patch may have been corrupted, and while patching it may have screwed up some files and patched it with faulty files. All I can say is do a clean install really since because I like to make sure all those bugs away and I have a clean operating system that I would like to operate without problems.

... Why would you want to mod your startup screen anyways, your the only one that sees it loading for about 10 secs :D
