I've had this for ages now and i've always wondered, should my transfer speeds be faster than the 30mb/s that i get?
whenever i'm transferring files, i'm only running, MSN and maybe Foobar for some music, on my quad core. so, no load whatsoever on the cpu, both are USB 2.0 so no problems there.
Is this a normal speed? or is there a gremlin in the system?
You not gonna get more through usb. So, it's normal.

i read somewhere USB 2.0 has a very high transfer speed, was this info incorrect?
Depends what they mean by high. Firewire is better, take a look slowest firewire is rated 400mbps, usb 2.0 is 480mbps. Still firewire beats usb 2.0 if you transfer lots of files.
Link below that you could check "how fast is usb 2.0"

I have not seen a usb hard drive going much beyond 30mb/s.

USB gives the slowest sustained transfers of the three commonly used connectors on externals. If you have esata on it use that as its basically like connecting the drive directly to your motherboard. If you use esata the drive and not the interface is the bottleneck. Firewire as previously mentioned has a lower max burst then USB 2.0 however firewire has higher sustained transfers then USB.
Basically if you stay on USB then yes the max you could get is what you are getting now. If your external drive has esata or even firewire connectors use them instead.
