yes or no

is the 4850 worth upgrading to now vs my current 8600GT 1GB???

if it makes a difference, i will soon upgrade to a E8400 (when nehalem comes out)

definitey yes.

the mainstream 8 series cards (such as your 8600) have horrible performance compared to any of the available cards today. you'll be able to see a big jump in framerates and the ability to crank up AA and AF.

The upgrade will be nice all around. The CPU will limit you a little bit currently but the GPU upgrade will be worth it. I upgraded from a 8800GT and just one 4850 was a worthy upgrade to the old card. So with a 8600GT, yeah a 4850 will be a nice performance increase for you.

EDIT* POSTED BY GRUMPY_DOG666 *

is it worth getting it now, or is it worth waiting for the OCed ones, or something other than reference boards, ie better coolers! these bitches are loud at over 50% and hot if run under 50%

I feel your pain... 45% does a decent job if your not OCing, but then where is the fun in that? :)
