View Full Version : High ambient temps

Hi
Where I live temps go up to 39 in peak summer. As of now the maximum temperature is about 25 and minimum around 18/19.
Also, the Volcano II is the best cooler available for the Athlon XP in these parts.
A really sad situation.
In any case, my temps now are at 49 on full load (after removing the double-sided tape and putting in some generic compund) with folding or Deus Ex and 33 idle, using Vcool. Or about 24 degrees above ambient at full load, and 8 degrees under no load.
These are way too high! My Duron 750 had a cheapo Chinese cooler and went up to a max of 45 under similar conditions.
In summer, the temp is likely to climb by those 14 degrees, meaning a processor-frying temperature of about 63.
Any suggestions? I really thought the XP produced less heat than the Tbird, and that produced less heat than a Duron (I don't remember where I had read this).

1) xp does release less heat than the tbird, but that doesn't mean much :)
Anyways, i suggest you 1) use a peltier or water cooling. or 2) get a REALLY nice heatsink, like the alpha pal8045 (the 80mm ones). Also, you should definitly lap it, and use ASII or another high quality goop.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, gaccm.
However, there's no ASII, or Alpha, available from retailers in the country. Also there are some issues about buying over the web or getting stuff sent in from other countries.
Water cooling is an option, but I'd have to rig it up myself. Can I mod this heatsink itself? I thought not, but might be interesting to do...

Hi - I am in Bombay and I used a Volcano 5 from Aug till a couple of weeks back. I had lapped the Volcano 5 to be as smooth as possible with Sand Papers upto 1600 grit. I had the base of the Heat Sink smooth as silk. After lapping I would get 45C when the ambient temperature was 28C. When I changed from an AMD 1333 to a AMD XP 1600+ I had a drop of 6C !!
2 weeks back I got a Thermalright SK6 Heat Sink on which I use the Volcano 5 fan and I have lapped even this Heat Sink's base to a mirror finish. I now have Artic Silver 2 heat sink compound and guess what temperatures I get ... 45C with an ambient temperature of 28C !! There is no difference at all with the SK6 as against the Volcano 5. I have read so many people mentioning about the Volcano fans that I picked up 2 more Volcano 2's just to get their fans :)
I think the SK6 gives good cooling only with a fast fan. It is not very effective with fans like the TT which I now use. I have a Delta Screamer 60mm Fan for the heat sink which I am going to use in Summer as it is extrememly noisy and I will not use it untill the CPU temeperatures go too high.
I have 5 extra case fans - 1x120mm 1x93mm and 3x80mm.
I got the SK6 HSF via my brother who lives in - Calcutta !!! Small world.

If you want to try water cooling you can try www.below-0.com. The are in Australia but send cooling equipment anywhere in the world. They stock pumps and water blocks. They do not list the JARON series yet but I believe that they will soon (see www.jaron.com.au). Ask them. There is also Silverprop but I am not sure if they send stuff overseas (www.silverprop.com.au).
Due to the low Australian dollar you can buy stuff for OZ really cheap.
As for cooling the water I would use a cooling tower as they are much better for high temp areas. Where I live it hit 39°C a few weeks ago and my Duron 750@1000 never got above 37°C. My mates Athlon1.2 at 1500 never got above 41°.

Guido:
Thanks for the info. Will check back later with you. There's actually an issue with foreign currency and getting stuff into the country. I had posted about it a while back, somewhere on this place. Customs, duties, taxes, that sorta thing. Prices are OK from anywhere, shipping for most stuff cost 100-200 US greens to ship. It's a major problem since my other love is music, and you can't survive without some good stuff from abroad. So you have to depend on other (read: Dubious) sources to get gear. :(
In terms of computers, some things are better now than they were a few years back. At least you get AMD Athlon CPUs, Soltek boards (You had three choices earlier: Asus, Intel original, or some horrible generic motherboards :D ) .

And a Hey to you!! You've got all the right stuff as I can see in your sig, and since you got the Thermalright from hereabouts I'll check with some more people. Does your brother have any contacts I could talk to? Some phone numbers and names would be OK. Actually I was looking for the Alpha PAL 8045, which is the best air cooler around. I did hear of something for 700 bucks but I wasn't interested in buying without seeing it, and they weren't interested in showing if I wasn't buying.
And what're you doing with such a fab system, if you don't mind me asking? I'm planning to use mine for my music (soon as I can play something). Did lapping drop your temps any? I've been thinking about it but I'm all thumbs so I'm not really sure this is something I wanna do.
Last question: where'd you get that RAM from? All I managed to get was some Delta memory (the big thing in the 70's) with Samsung modules.:(
One more last question: Have you OC'd the board? If so, how fast have you gone? I've managed 150 before BSOD's. How does the DRV hold up? I hear it's a pretty decent board, and the price is fantastic.

Oh, yeah, subman3, welcome to OC.com!!

My brother got the SK6 for me from London for Pounds 50 !!! Think about THAT - 3500 of our local money for a Heat Sink Fan !!!!!
I am a computer hardware consultant of sorts.
Believe it or not I have an Alpha cooler.... an old 6035 which I used with my P3's. It is made for Intel chips only - not recommended for AMD hot stuff.
Lapping, change of HSF and also using AS2 did nothing to my Temperatures - and I did everything by the book. Like I said I am certian that the SK6 will really show its cooling effeciency when I use the Delta fan. I think the copper fins of the SK6 need a heavy air flow to get the heat off.
Kingston memory is available here at approx 4500 local smackers for 256mb and it is lifetime warrantied. Buying 512 Kingston DDR Ram tomorrow for a friend for an ASUS DDR Ram P4 MoBo. I cannot hit 1T in the BIOS with these rams - system locks up. From my experience I find Samsung chips pretty good - I have Nanya chips on my modules.
Maybe in Cal you dont get a choice of the BIG names in MoBo's but here in Bombay we get many of them except Abit and Soyo. Even Epox is available here.
Thanks for the welcome - it was my first message on this board but I have been a regular visitor to OC since my Celeron 300 days :D
I am not into overclocking.... er... so what am I doing at this site !! :)
P.S. Just changed MoBo and display card.

sangram,
Shipping from Australia to India should be no where near $100US. Send www.below-0.com an email and ask how much it will cost. I think you will find that it is not that bad.
If they mail it to you then I think that you would pay very little customs.
