Hi

I'm getting one of these towmorow. Which one should I buy?

I prefer one thats more silent and uses less power if the speed is about the same. So if one does over 100mb/s loudly and the other 80-85 in pure silence I would go with the latter. Also seek time should be under (or max) 15-16ms.

Thanks!

Hi. I have the WD 640 in an Antec Veris. I am not able to hear the drive at all. It is also the FASTEST drive I have ever had the pleasure of using. I don't know about the Samsung, but the WD rocks!

The WD will be quieter, and definitely sub 16ms.

From the link above, the samsung comes out as the winer in most speed tests. Sound is about the same, only power usage is better for the WD.

So I'll get the WD... I guess.

edit: only thing is that Samsung is cheaper where I buy it from.

So if I'm reading that article right, this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136074) drive is a single platter drive?

You have to find the full product name of the wd3200aaks if you want to be guarenteed the single platter drive otherwise you might get one of the old ones. That's why i went seagate for mine

I got the WD drive... I get good performance out of it, but it's not that silent.

The 320g (one platter) Seagate 7200.11 I had was a bit faster at transfer rates, slower seek time, about the same temp, but much quieter.

Overall I am happy with the purchase.

Although you might have gotten the type with screwed up casing (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article819-page3.html) :p
