Hey!

I am running a intel dual core 2.4 ghz with 2gb ddr on ubuntu.

I am having the problem that the latency (response time) for the clients on the server seems very unstable when playing on the server. I assume that this is happening cause hlds is switching cores.
Is there anyway to block hlds from switching cores?

cheers

Sure it's the core switching? What tick rate are you running at? What priority is the hlds thread?

Are you having framerate issues or latency issues? If it is latency issues I would say the issue would be with your network somewhere. You might want to check your network card and router settings.

thx both of you for the fast answers

I'm not 100% sure but i cant think of any other possibility. I have another server with the exact same dist. / hardware and its the same thing there. I am running 1000hz and the priority is standard.

latency issues. The network has been checked and there is no problem there.

What's the upload and download on your connection? It its just a normal cable or DS model you wont be able to host more than 4 people.

I ran a 24 person CS serer back in the day on a Celeron 333. So you shouldnt have ANY issues

600Mbit upstreams/downstreams so the connection aint poor lol :)

This has something spooky inside my machine and i cant figure out what. Its driving me crazy. The CPU usage is not high and i have tried to set the highest priority to the hlds processes now but no results. I keep getting ping spikes.

I am almost sure that there is something happening when it is jumping to another core.

I've noticed a kind've ping spike when I had the priority set to normal in windows...I changed it to realtime and things became much more smooth.

Increased the priority of the hlds processes but still no luck.
My idea of the cores switching were wrong also. Made a script that sorted the hlds processes on the cores but no luck there either :(

what can be wrong??

When in doubt, do a full wipe of the computer!

Okay so i just found out that the problem in this case has something to do with SMP. When i turn SMP off and recomile my kernel so everything just runs on one cpu everything works great except that my other core is dead :P .

Anyone know how to fix this?

While this is a gaming related issue, you might want to visit the Alternative Operating Systems subforum since you're working in linux. There are a lot of knowledgeable people who frequent that area maybe more than the gaming section, and you might get even get someone who's had a similar or the same problem. I'd recommend just starting a new thread there with a brief explanation, and providing the link back to this thread.

Not that there aren't linux-literate people in the gaming forum, but it's another avenue to look for help :)
