hi everybody,

i've decided to take the plunge and flash my sapphire 4850 bios. so, i edited it with RBE, saved it, and made a bootable cd according to bart's guide. i put the new bios and atiflash.exe and all the other atiflash files on it, and when it boots up, i pick option 1 (boot into dos with cdrom support) It then runs autoexec.bat, and then prompts A:\> At this point, i enter atiflash -p 0 new.bin, doesn't work. I realize i probably need to start atiflash, so i try atiflash, atiflash.exe, START atiflash, etc., but they all come back as invalid command. Please help me! I'm so clueless, should I start it in autoexec.bat, and if yes, then how? or is there some other command i should use? much thanks for whoever can help

type in dir, to see if the files are even there, if not you need to check, or figure out what you did wrong and why the files are not there.....you could also, just switch to your hdd, and access the flasher and the bios too, you do not need to burn everything right onto the cd.

At the A:\> prompt you need to change to the Drive Letter for your CD/DvD so in if your CD drive is D: enter that at the A:\> prompt type in Dir D: and hit enter, this should birng up a list of the available files... to confirm that it is the right drive.

Once you confirmed the correct drive, at the A:\> prompt type in D: and hit 'enter' to change to that Directory.

A new prompt will appear D:\> at this prompt type in the command to run the flashing utility atiflash -p 0 new.bin so it will be like this D:\> atiflash -p 0 new.bin and hit 'enter'

That should run correctly.... if you are still intent on flashing your BIOS, personally I'm waiting a while longer as many people have been reporting that after flashing the BIOS their cards are dying.....

That's only on the 4870's, though, right? The flash programs were still assuming a 64KB ROM size when it's 128KB now. I think that issue has been fixed w/ new flashing software.

The newest ATI Flash utility (3.60) can still give you problems if you're not careful. Try saving your existing BIOS using the typical command and you'll end up with a 64kb saved file (and a DOA card if you re-flash it). You need to specify the 2000 ROM size switch to get it to save correctly.

ok, so i tried dir A:\, and indeed, there is no atiflash to be found. Only the standard dos files. I looked in every folder, and nothing even close. however, the actual cd itself ONLY shows the atiflash files and the new bios in windows, none of the dos files. This seems quite strange to me. one of the lines in bart's guide somewhat confuses me "Adding programs and files to "cds\cdromsi\files\" folder. These will appear in the root of your CD-Rom filesystem." i put the atiflash files in that folder as they say, but i don't understand the second sentence. and dir c:\ and dir d:\ results in "invalid drive specification" i feel like im really close, can anybody help out?

AAARGGH, so, i found out that there was another image on the cd that would then boot into dos that contained all the dos stuff. So, i used winimage and injected the atiflash files into this image. so, i finally expected it to work, but when i typed atiflash -p 0 new.bin, it gave me load error, no DOS memory or something like that. *sigh* so, i've given up on this stupid bart's method, can ANYONE tell me how to make a bootable dos cd with atiflash on it? Thanks

I finally got it to work using nero, and then switching to the hard drive....but, only a 50 point increase on 3dmark06 from 700/1150 to 750/1150. I guess 11850 isn't that bad. Oh well....

3DMark06 runs at low rez w/o any eye-candy on. It's a poor judge of actual performance on the 4850 which shines at high rez w/ lots of AA goodness.

Try running Vantage H or X. Or just try playing some games.
