Hey guys, I have troubles w/ my HDD is now its not working like it should, can I somehow put INSTALLED windows on a CD and make it work like it should, the CD-Rom drive will have the letter C, cause there will be no harddrive in the system, can I somehow make it work?
I want to burn the CD at a friends comp, I don't have CD-RW so there will not be the option of puting it into a CD-RW drive w/ a CD-RW CD. What u think?

To be clear, you want to copy your Windows on to a CD how? And you want to do what with it? Sorry, I am not following.
You mean boot Me off of a CD?
I don't think that can be done
If you have registry problems etc I would say back up your docs to CD and just reformat. Try WinXp or 2k - they are both better than Me - Yuk!

flouner43: I want to burn the contents of the drive to the CD, I want only to fold w/ it till I get a good drive.
penguinfreak: I'm having phisical HDD problems, I need to somehow use the comp in HDDless mode, and a server OS on the main comp is out of the ? for me...
It is very nearly impossible to boot winme off a read only medium. I think Norton Systemworks can make a boot disk (250MB ZIP disk) which can boot into windows ?
Not possible. Besides. There would be so many variables you'd run into installing off a friend's comp. Fix the hard drive.

Ghost the image (using the Ghost of course). If it is small enough to fit on a CD-R, then burn the image to CD-R. Reformat, then re-install from the image and hope that the image data is not corrupted.
Otherwise do a clean format and re-install your apps, and just save the the data files to CD-R.
BTW, tread lightly on the subject of copying Windows in any fashion. Microsoft takes a dim view of it and so do we. :)

Newbie_Doo>> OK, that sounded interesting, but I didn't understand the "then burn the image to CD-R. Reformat, then re-install from the image " part. could u explain?
The problem is that the HDD is dead, untill I get $$$ for a new 1 I must run the comp HDDless

i don't think what you want to do is possible.
you want to have all of your systems files on a cd (as if the cd was your hard drive) and have your hardware communicate with the cdrom to carry out all of the functions of the computer. i just don't think theres any way to do this at all.
this would mean having all of your registry, windows folder, program files, etc all on a cd. i just can't see this happening. is windows ME even small enough (after installation) to fit on a single dics?
its a good idea, just trying to present some things for you to think about. chances are you are going to have to wait till you can afford a new hard disk.
what are you using to post on now? is there any way you can swap out that hard drive temporarily? just a thought.

YOu are basically stuck till u gat a new Hdd

Yes, he basically wants to install ME to a cdrom instead of a hard drive and run his computer off of that CD.
I won't say it's not possible, however it's just not feasible, probably wont fold, and isn't worth the pain to do it.
There is no way, as WinMe would need to edit teh files and stuff on the CD, NOw this may work on a CD-RW BUT, Windows couldnt know that....Windows Me is an OKAY OS, great for games, but as for stability...nah...WinMe hates to have its registry edited...

I was told that I can do a Image/ghost w/ Norton to a CD and windoze will work fine, if I remove the SWP file.
Windows will write to the boot drive. Unless you boot off a CD and use a RAMdisk then you can not run winme just off a cd
