When you run the configuration make sure to change advanced options and then under "Additional client parameters." make sure to put in "-smp X" where X equals the amount of cores you want to run on.
I tried for hours to get this new version running and just putting in "-smp" with no luck...:bang head now its up and running.

We need a guide for SMP on XP right now, there isn't one on the sticky thread. Maybe you could work something up?

I put that in but it still is not running right. :bang head
EDIT: Well when I put in -smp 4 it works just fine, but when you put -smp 2 it doesn't work right.
EDITING THE EDIT: Now it's thrown up and spitting out EUE's, sigh.

Just -smp is working fine for me on both rigs.

Yeah I spent probably 2 hours yesterday struggling with the new client. Maybe it's just user error on my part but I've seen quite a few posts already about problems.
I'm just using the -smp flag as well, so far so good.
I did have a problem with the old service not deleting, and I think that caused most of my grief. Manually deleted it from the registry, then installed the new client, that seemed to fix me up.

I'm still having problems with it. I will work on it more Wednesday, if I get everything working good I will probably write a guide on smp/xp... for now, just running dual uni clients.

I don't get what is going on here. I can't run the console anymore b/c every time I try to start it it gives a response that this version expired, yet I completly removed the old version before putting 6.22 on. So I have it running, but it is running single core b/c I can't get it to allow me to set flags, or the advanced options.

Also I should add, I tried the 'Deino' (sp?) version, that didn't work so well for me. It used all 4 cores but only with like 75% total utilization. Not cool. My advice is, don't use that one.

Until there is a simple download, install, and fold client, I'm done folding. I don't have a problem dedicating a machine to a process, but this is ridiculous. The old ones were fine.

I am kind of feeling the same way. I had not moved to GPu yet b/c I wasn't comfortable loading my VJ cards like that, but they are leaving me little choice.

GPU was easy comparatively. This thing........UGH! They even botched the GPU now as well as the SMP. I love the cause, but they need to stop making it hard for people to contribute. I mean we just recently got GPU2 and already they are changing stuff, wtf?

Stuff will change rapidly as they learn more about how to build WUs, clients and cores to get the results they need. They are trying to get the most bang for the buck in R&D with the project and it's not that easy to adapt it to existing hardware/driver configurations as fast as it's evolving.
I get frustrated at times too but I just adapt and fold on for the cure.
BTW I've have very little problem with the Linux VM SMP_FAH clients.

I understand, but they should leave an option of some kind instead of deciding to move the entire populous to one and one only format.
It'll take a while but I may have to get a Linux box up and see how that works, thanks for the heads up AA

Don't get me wrong, I am still 100% behind that cause as well. I just agree with the above. Why do they have to expire something that was working before the next phase is ready? I mean teams like ours are here that will test the new clients and put them through their paces while everyone else can continue to use what is working until the new client is tweaked.

You have to reboot after installing Deino, otherwise cached applications may still run even if their harddrive image is gone.
The flags go outside the quotation marks in the TARGET line under properties for your shortcut.

The high performance clients are most definitely under construction and it is known that they will have problems, flaws and hiccups along the way. If you don't like the bother (who does!!) then stick with the tried and true normal clients that are fully operational and don't have the same headaches associated. I am running several Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista Text-only console 5.04's and it has worked perfectly for a long time now.

You know, to be completely honest, I was so disgusted about how complicated the new clients were and knew that the previous had been canceled, I never thought the old old ones would be up so I never looked. But is there an archaic GPU client that I can run as well? I want to support the cause because I still, and always have, wholeheartedly believed in it and would like to continue to work towards helping, but not if it means so much of a headache. :bang head

You have to delete the FahSMP folder completely and reboot.
Install Deino and create a shortcut with the "-smp -deino" flags added. Makes sure smpd.exe isn't still running in Windows Manager. If it is, RUN "smpd.exe -uninstall" before Deino will work properly.

Yep, graphical client 5.03 is still up and works great and its easy to monitor what's going on by just calling up the display. I have that running on some older P3 machines.

Yeah I found it actually, I got GPU and SMP going again......I think. Now I'll have to reinstate my T32 Flags on my avatar ;) Thank you Orion, I really appreciate the help

If you don't stop the smpd.exe service and delete it from the FahSMP folder, then it persists across the boot and prevents proper operation. Make sure smpd.exe isn't running in the Task Manager after you reboot; if it is, then RUN smpd.exe -uninstall will kill it.

I'm dual booting XPx64 and Vista 64 and have got the 6.22 SMP running using -smp -forceasm -verbosity 9
However in task manager I see 4 times FAHcore A1**** running? CPU load is at 100% and production seems ok. Should I use "-smp 2" in this case? It seems unlogical to see 4 cores running in task manager...

Ok, it's all sorted now. I won't know if it is actually turning in points for a few hours so I'm not 100% convinced yet. Thanks for the help.

Well scratch that. I came home tonight to this message: "Folding at Home has run into a serious error and will close the core." Or pretty much that at least.

Yep, had that message. I had to delete the FahSMP folder, uninstall Deino, reboot and reinstall. It's working fine so far.

When you run the configuration make sure to change advanced options and then under "Additional client parameters." make sure to put in "-smp X" where X equals the amount of cores you want to run on.

Yea I had the same problem and flet the same way but then I just decided to bench my cpu myslef and was able to only get three clients running at once which only got it to 75% in total cpu usage which I don't mind. I feel like I'm doing triple as good good as I would be to even if I did get utlizing all four cores at 100% with one smp client.

There is now a fix to the 6.22beta2 it is now 6.22r2 see this new thred
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=573847
Currently if you enter only the -smp flag, the client defaults to 4 threads. Any number less than 4 isn't valid and you get the default.
The flags can go on the shortcut target, but they work just as well in the extra parameters section of advanced options. Flags entered in the extra paramaters section do not work until the client is restarted, therefore you should use -configonly rather than -config to enter flags in advanced options.
I'm sorry you guys are having trouble. I'm running both versions of the 6.22 client on Vista and XP without issue. I see little difference between production on deino as on MPCIH.

for me putting -smp 4 in the advance didnt work - i had to delete my queue.dat file after 3 retries for it to grab a _a1 core (that was after deleting the _82 exe and the work folder between retries)
