View Full Version : Is it only the Core that generates all the heat?

Is the core of the CPU the main generator of all of the heat? If so, would direct die cooling return better cooling results than trying to cool the whole chip? I realize you need a large surface area, but that can be handled later in a newly designed heatsink/waterblock.

The Core generates the vast majority of the heat. Most heat sinks are larger than the core so heat can travel both vertically and horizontally away from the core and to the fins to be dissipated.

Aye, you couldn't have said it better.

Yes the core is the main heater, but since a waterblock only makes contact with the core, that's the only component being cooled. There is some cooling result for the other components, but this is simply because the heat from the core is being transmitted away (ideally) from them instead of being allowed to 'sink' into the substrate.

Last I heard, Overclocker is working on a direct die block that is only cooling the core. (only the core would be wet) This would be ideal as long as the waterflow across the core would negate the need for heat spreading to a large copper surface.
A very interesting project to say the least, I'd like to see his progress.

Overclocker already has one for a Duron. He just wants to make for for I do belive a Athlon or XP. With a Duron 800 O.C.ed to 1000 he gets a load temp of 24C.

By Direct Die do you mean the water touches the core?
Are there pictures?

Yes DirectDie cooling touches the core.

I don't know any site with pictures but I've seen a Sunny Delight bottle turned to direct die cooling and it worked better than a Maze 2.

This (http://www.agaweb.com/coolcpu/build.htm) has got to be the coolest direct water cooler ever. Talk about cheap!

The K6-2 chip package is the same size as all the new chips so it should still work, no?

Ive seen it done on a K6-2. I'm going to try to find the site.

Yes Spode (a senior member) has some pics, check 'em out here (http://www.spodesabode.com/view.php?pageid=directdie1)

This is too perfict i was looking for a way to direct die cool my cyrix mII PR300 and Usernames link shows how to do it on a similer chip

I really don't know if your kidding me or not tbird. If i were you i'd sell the cyrix to the smithsonian and buy something made in this decade.

Seriously. I run a pentium 200 as my main machine. You can laugh now.

The same rig should work with duron and XP chips, as the packages are the same size.

PS
How do i get an avatar?
