how easy is it to add a new graphics card to a laptop?

That depends on the laptop. What do you have now and what do you want to upgrade it to? As far as how easy; some are almost plug and play. Some require a fair amount of disassembly.

well, i was considering buying a decent laptop with maybe a 7300, and then upgrading to an 8400 or so, would that be easy or hard?

again, it depends on the laptop.
Is the 7300 soldered to the MB or is it a seperate card that can be upgraded?
Is the cost of the 8400 going to be more then 50% of the cost of buying a NEW laptop or is it only going to be 100 quid?

in 95% of the cases a graphics card upgrade is not possible

Not impossible. Look into MXM and you will see that a handful of laptops can have upgraded video cards. I have a 8600m GT 512mb DDR2 sitting right here actually, can work in a handful of laptops.

Yup I have 4 laptops here in the office that can be upgraded to better video cards, too bad the video card costs 25+% of the cost of a new laptop.
