View Full Version : need a little help with a folding GPU...

I know this isn't exactly a folding issue but this GPU will be used exclusively for folding and I seem to get the best advice in this forum anyways....
Just got a new 9800GX2 for a dedicated folding rig and am having some issues getting it to work. I can not seem to get video on my monitor. I did what I typically do when installing a new GPU (and what the instructions said to do) which was disabling current video device (in this case onboard video), powering down, installing the card, connecting the monitor and powering up but got no video. Card seems to be powered fine (LEDs are eluminated) and my PSU meets required specs (580W and 40A 12v rail, I have a Corsair 650WTX, 52A 12v). Double checked that it was in the PCIe slot good and tight, tried to power on a couple times still nothing.
I am putting this in an Asus P5K-VM, is there somewhere in the BIOS that I need to "turn on" or enable the PCIex16 slot? Anyone have any ideas what I can try to get this working? I can't wait to start kicking some WU butt with this thing....

I'm no expert but I think you might need to uninstall drivers before powering down with the original card. Then windows will use its default drivers and recgonize the card. Thats all I can think of but I dont have a 9800 so there might be a difference because of that.
P.S. If you're not seeing the bios screen you might try resetting the bios first.

ah, good idea, I usually uninstall drivers when replacing a video card, did not think to do that for onboard video. Reseting the BIOS is my next step, when I get home from work...
any other suggestions welcome....

I did not notice the fact that it is a onboard. Should have from the vm suffix anyway. Look in the bios and I think there is a setting for the onboard vs ad on gpu IIRC.

Are you getting video at the boot screen or no video at all? No video at all means it is more than a driver problem, but you do still have to do as suggested above and remove the old drivers first.
Either way, I read your first post twice and didn't see where you had plugged in the PCIe power plug (or maybe plugs with that card) when you installed it. It will be getting power through the bus, but not enough to run properly without directly connecting it to the power supply. I've had this happen when I forgot to hook up the PCIe 6 pin plug on a 7800gt, it wouldn't even show the boot screen.

got the 6 pin and the 8 pin (yeah this card requires both...) plugged in. I am getting video when connected to the onboard, none when connected to the card.

I have never had to change BIOS video settings before in the past with any other builds so I do not know much aout them, does anyone know what settings would need to be chnaged to what with a P5K-VM for this? I am thinking this is where my issue is...
Disabling the onboard video should be enough.
Do you have a second 16x pci slot on that Mobo? Try it in that.
Nevermind it only has one.
Is that GPU on the list of compatible GPU's for that board?
Updating your BIOS is listed as a fix for this problem on the ASUS site.

Ugh! Still having issues...
tired most of everything listed here (only thing left is flashing to newer BIOS, doing it now..) and still getting no video. Can not find anything on the web as to whether the P5K-VM supports the 9800 GX2. Onboard video will not even work if the card is installed, if I take the card and change nothing onboard will work. I found the disable internal graphics adapter setting in the BIOs but did not get the card working. Guess maybe I need to get on the phone with Asus tech support, not sure if they will be much more help though...

Do you have another PCIe graphics card or can you borrow one to rule out the graphics card or PCIe slot?
It asks you to disable the on board audio. I don't know if they meant on board video or not but you might as well try it.

not sure what made it happen but I got the GPU working! I flashed up to the latest BIOs and then switched the internal graphic diplay to disabled and installed the card and rebooted. At first it did not look like I was getting video so i just left it and then after about 5 minutes or so the video showed up and it has been working since. Maybe I just was not waiting long enough all along, not sure, never had to wait for video to show up on a monitor after installing a GPU, maybe this board is just on the edge of being able to handle this card? I don't know. Needless to say, it was pretty late once I got to this point so I havn't had a chance to fold it yet, hopefully tonight.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Strangeness :screwy:
Just curious... you said you had to wait 5 minutes before it showed up. I assume you were already at the Windows login screen by then? And now on subsequent boots you get video immediately during POST... don't have to wait?

exactly, weird, huh? I'm gonna hook up the second monitor tonight and then install GPU2 and get these 2 bad boys cranking.
I still need to figure out what to do for the VMware/SMP client setup on this rig also.
And I need to get SMP clients up and running again on my HTPC and Main rig, have not updated since the expiriation, been busy the last few days. Any advice on what to do for this would be GREATLY appreciated!!

We'll talk about the VMWare/Linux/SMP setup some more... I know I owe you a PM. ;)
To get the Windows SMP clients up and rolling again, take a look at this thread.

It has drop in replacements for v5.91 or v5.92, not sure which one you ended up using. I'm a v5.91 guy myself. Otherwise you'll have to remove the old versions and pick up the new v6.22 client.

One way or another you'll need to eventually upgrade to v6.22, but if time is of the essence then the replacement v5.91 or v5.92 will do for now. I need to do the upgrades as well- just haven't stopped any of my WinSMP clients since they expired. ;) I'll probably go straight to v6.22 on mine.

thanks for the info, should have some time this evening to look into it. Also, before you PM me on VMware, I have installed Vista on my dedicated and I'd like to keep it that way, is VMware still possible? thought that tidbit might save some PM's and time!

Yep... VMWare is still ok to run. The reason we all run Linux in VMs is because Linux is generally a touch faster (sometimes much faster - depending on the hardware) than Windows Folding... and it's free so you don't have to worry about licensing issues.
So instead of running one WinSMP client in Vista... you can run two VMWare VMs with a Linux distro (we like Ubuntu) and run one Linux SMP client inside each VM. Although with your 9800GX2 in there as well the setup may end up with just one Linux VM... we'll have to see. But before this GPU2 thing came about recently the best PPD on a quad was running 2xVMWare/Linux/SMP. That config will out pace a single WinSMP client by ~25%.
