Hey I'm a very casual gamer but I was thinking of getting a PS3 mainly just for folding as I heard they are pretty decent. I just want to know if its worth shelling out the cash for one or should I invest it into another rig?
Like I said I wouldn't MIND playing a game here or there but the main thing would be for folding.
I think i'm addicted lol!!
best regards,
eddy

if your gonna be even playing games once and a while go for it, its also good for movies, and of course folding.

Depends, as the PS3 is great for the cause, but not so great for points. If you're all about the science, go for it. If you're looking to rack up points, they only get around 900 PPD (AFAIK).

I agree.
If your gonna also play PS3 on it then get it. If not, then for a rig.

I sometimes get up to 1000ppd off of it. It's no weakling in Folding. I'd only get one if you plan to use its other useful features, though.

How many cores does the PS3 have and what is it clocked at?

How many cores does the PS3 have and what is it clocked at?
It has a Cell Broadband Engine processor, consisting of a single multithreaded PowerPC core, and eight specialized vector processors (of which only six are available, as one is reserved for the console OS and one is reserved as a spare for improved chip yields).
In the PS3, the Cell is clocked at 3.2 GHz.

Per the original plan, they were supposed to release new PS3 designs every so often with more and more Cells in them to support new/more advanced games. The PS3 architecture is supposed to last 10 years (but you'd still need a new box from time to time to play the latest and greatest).

Actually the cheaper one is 65nm and the more expensive one is 90nm. So the cheaper one will be quieter (they're both pretty quiet) and run cooler. (The 90nm is DEFINITELY hotter.)

The 65nm / 40 gb unit can get pretty loud itself, it has quite a fan on it. I had to shutdown PS3 folding a month ago as the PS3 was drowning out my ten fan quad-core rig.
