will a AMP increase d/l and u/l speed for cable?

is it worth buying a cheap AMP to see if you can increase stability and maybe make a faster connection?

I get really bad ping times but d/l and u/l is still pretty good will this increase my ping times at all?

I was having a little trouble with my upload speeds for a while and tried one from radioshack and it had no effect on my speeds whatsoever. It was a bi-directional one which means it boosts in both directions so not to block the outgoing data. Not worth the money. The only thing they are good for is if you have a very long run of cable. What cable modem do you have? is it the motorola surfboard? If so check your Diag. page at http://192.168.100.1/signal.html. Look at the downstream powerlevel and it should be as close to Zero as possible. They say it can go up to plus/minus 15 I think for an adequate connection but I would wouldn't want it over +/- 7.

Yea it only works with the motorola. do a google search and see if there is somthing like it for your modem.

In my area the APMs help quite a bit, they used ****ty cabling in the ground so there is quite a bit of signal lose. These only help weak signals, if you're got a strong signal but it's still slow then it'd be more with your software settings. Although I still don't see how those software cable modem accelerators can work, I hear more about how they mess up a connection than improve it, and when they do say it improves it, there's very little evidance.

I also don't use windows and have never heard of anything like that for linux. So I'm assuming it's OS related, but then unix has always done tcp/ip better than winblows.
