Hey all and a happy New Year!

I'm almost finished with my homemade water cooling rig, but would like some details regarding the stand off bolts that holds the waterblock, or more exactly the spacers between the motherboard and the waterblock, has anybody a measurement of that distance, so that I can make them before I take my pc apart.

Thanks

Hey Bureso,

I don't use standoffs. I started too, but was worried that they could interfere with the waterblock sitting all the way down.

Using all white nylon hardware, except springs, I do the as the picture I've enclosed. I use 6-32 bolts and nuts (about 3-4 mm) with the bolts being about 60mm long.
Tighten the nuts evenly down to the springs, then turn each nut 1 turn in a crossing pattern. I measure how much bolt is left above the nuts to make them all the same tightness.

Have a great time, and enjoy the watercooling.

*edit* you can use stainless steel bolts and nuts, but you must use plastic/nylon washers on both sides of the motherboard. I do use s.steel, and plastic washers on both sides of the motherboard.

I'm was planning on mounting my waterblock like in the picture Diggrr posted above. I'll use the 4 holes around the socket area. What kind of springs are good to use? How much spring tension is needed?

Great, thanks Diggrr.

The reason I wanted to use the standoffs was to eliminate the risk of doing damage to the processor.

And as J37X was asking, what springs shut I bye?

I understand the thinking but if the standoffs are off by a hair it is goodbye processor. I would'nt use any and have not seen many that do. You really want to know (for sure) that the water block is square and resting on the core. Besides, I see no standoffs in Diggers figure.

I would never make them to fit exactly, just 1mm short off, that way your chances of ruin the processor will be minimum, its just a precaution.
