View Full Version : Ram acting weird when OCing.

So when I got my new board and processor, I dropped my multi down to 6 to see how far I could push my ram. Now when I'm OCing things, I work a little weird. I put my voltage to whatever up as high as I'm comfortable (in my rams case, 2.2v), and work from there, going down.

So I have my multi at 6, my FSB at 450mhz, and the ram voltage at 2.2v. Start Orthos blend, and it crashes within a few minutes generally. Drop the FSB down to 442 (what I planned on running it at), and does the same thing. Up the voltage a little bit more, same thing. Finally get up to 2.35v on the ram, and it's still not stable.

So I do a little browsing on the internet, and find one fellow who said his ram wasn't stable at anything about stock voltage, which was 1.9. So for fun, I drop my voltage down to 1.9v, leave the FSB at 442, and try it. It runs fine. Is that normal? It not running with a little bit more voltage, but running fine at stock?

Yeah, sometimes ram will run normally with low voltage and act all whacko with high voltage. You might have some older ram that requires no voltage at all.

Another thing is the board itself can be overvolting the ram past it's specs so by setting it in the bios @ 1.9v, the board could be pumping more than that.

Only way to test this theory is :

A) test the ram in another board to be sure it only needs 1.9V
B) Get a DMM and test the vdimm right from the board. For this you'll need technical specs of what part of the board is feeding the voltage to the ram.

I undervolt my ballistix at insane speeds...yet they live!

running 2.1 right now...at 1118mhz
