View Full Version : Is CPU too hot?

Ok, I know you guys have been asked this question millions of times, but just need to know.

I just built a computer with Asus A7V266-E with Athlon XP 1900+ cpu. I used the heat sink and fan that comes standard with the cpu. I also have two case fans in front of case, one back by the cpu, and one on the side of the case.

I then got MBM 5, set it up per instuctions, and here are my three sensor readouts:
-32 59 39

What temps are what, and am I too hot? Nothing is overclocked or tweaked in any way. Am I in danger? So far, no lockups, and been playing Medal of Honor multiplayer demo for a half hour now with nothing wrong yet.

Thanks in advance!

Athlon XP 1900+
ASUS A7V266-E
256 DDR2700 Ram
GeForce3 ti 500 64 megs
Soundblaster Live Value
15 Gig WD 7200rpm HD
Windows XP

Have you checked in your BIOS to see if you have a field for "CPU Health" or something along those lines? I would boot into the BIOS, check and record your CPU and Mobo temp and then boot into windows and play with the MBM5 settings until you find the right settings.

You might want to try MBM 4 as well. Newer isn't always better. MBM4 is more user-friendly and might be worth a try. If you plan on overclocking...get a new heatsink/fan combo. Good luck! Congrats on the new setup!

I think your 59 is your cpu, 39 is your mobo or system...the -32 is something that i've seen before but forgot what it is...

And those temps are pretty hoT!!!...are you sure you installed the fan right??...is the hs in the right position??...check it out...

nah 59c is on the low side for standard heatsink and fan, mine went up 69 when stressed.

59c is way too hot! ( 48c is the highest temp a cpu should be allowed to hit, which is still kinda high.)

Take 'willysnut' advice & reboot into system setup & check the temps in system health....
If it is not overclocked it should be no higher than 32c on the CPU, which is also the highest reading in MBM5.

You really should think about a decent heatsink for your investment.

erm, isnt 32c impossible with a mobo temp of 39c? clearly case cooling before processor cooling!

whats core1 voltage in mbm?

Core 1 voltage reads 0.11v

BTW, after taking the the whole computer out of the desk compartment, you know, they make a "special" place just for you to put your case in your desk, thereby effectively cutting off airflow, idle temps are now at 53c, MB 33c. That's a whopping 6 degree's!

I also went into the bios to check temps in there and they read the same. Asus probe also reads the same. So I imagine that's what they really are.

After reading some of the posts you pro's put up, that still seems high to me.

Anyway, you guy's know what your doing when it comes to overclocking and keeping things cool. I'm just a damn noobie so I sure appreciate all the help. Now that we know temps are too high, can anyone recommend a good heatsink and fan to use, one that's not too hard too install?

Thanks guy's

sk-6 and a delta....also get some asII thermal paste...that will lower you another 6c probably.

also i recommend rain 2.0 if ur on win 98 or ME it does wonders for ur idle.. but nothing for ur load temp but thats ok as long as ur load is still ok.. i have a load of 44c with a volcano 2 and the torture test on prime 95 for like 30 min runing.. i also raised the fsb with cpufsb to 145 to get my 1.13 to 1.23 its not that big of a oc but 155 fsb will crash win so untill i can get a new mobo so i can use the muliplier on my chip im stuck on that.. o and a volcano 2 is like 10 bucks online even though i paid 30 :(

one more thing i hear deltas are loud so u might want to make sure u can handle the noise my system is loud but i use a headset so its all the same to me

My AthlonPalamino1200 oc'd to 1400 is 34cIdle....&38cFullLoad.
Here's what I use... OCZ-Goliath (http://www.ocztech.com/products/heatsinks/goliath/index.html) with QuickSilver Thermal Paste.

HardCoreCooling (http://www.hardcorecooling.com/) has some pretty decent stuff too.

Thanks Thermal, OCZ is the same place where I got my DDR 2700 memory. My memory has a blue jacket around it to keep it cool, which I thaought was cool.

Am going to order the Goliath and give it a try.

Inkleoneaters, thats what MBM say's for core voltage:

core0=1.82v core1=0.11

Thanks guys.

Core 0 should be measuring the Vcore of the CPU.(internal voltage)
Core 1 should be measuring the external voltage.( Voltage delivery to agp...for example.)

my system reads 1.92v-core0 & 1.59-core1...I use an EPox though, could be differant for Asus.

Look in your manual, for more info!:)

it doesnt say in my manual otherwise i wouldnt have asked, unless its on the diagram and i missed it, manual is a dodgy translation from some other language its not particularly detailed on this kind of stuff.

cheers for the help.

ASUS Probe is inaccurate.

Other then that, yeah man.

Cpuidle is a good program for when your idle. It really drops the cpu temp a lot.
