We've been a little quiet for the last week as we've put the finishing touches on the Heavy update. We thought the Pyro pack was the biggest we'd be doing for a while, due to the large changes to the Pyro, but the Heavy update has turned out to be even bigger. In addition to the three unlockable weapons and thirty-five achievements for the Heavy, we've got a new game mode with five new arenas for it, a new Payload map focusing on more open spaces than Goldrush, and another popular community-made map. Throughout the rest of the week we'll be giving you the details on all this, and if all goes well, you'll have your hands on it shortly afterwards.

The community-made map included in the Heavy update is cp_steel, by Jamie 'Fishbus' Manson. After the Pyro update we received a lot of email telling us how wrong we were in our choices, and cp_steel was an easy next choice due to the way it dominated the suggestions. If you're firing up your email right now to tell us that we never get anything right, please include suggestions of what map(s) we should be looking at next.

The average sniper kills me once, then ends up with a mouthful of buckshot. Surprising how badly they aim when you are unloading a shotgun on them, even at long distances.

You are one of the top 3 snipers I've come across. Big difference between you elite few and the average 'sit in an upper window and watch the same area all round' type I typically encounter.

I'll be waiting for the soldier update so I can get as many free kills as the other updated classes. Heavy is just sooo slow, if the CS knife is one of the weapons I might try the class again.

Achievement Icons are now up, as is the first unlock they are showing. The K.G.B [Killing Glove of Boxing]. I got a list of some of the achievements too.

Also, apparently Heavy is getting a sandwhich that heals HP, but Im not sure how you get the sandwhich, Im thinking from killing scouts. There is also word that the new minigun does less damage, but people getting hit by it get a -50% debuff in speed.

i love to play heavy on 3-pg they got a custom coder, you switch to fists, you run s fast as a spy, no more slow heavy :) also helps i am 6th ranked on their server for points :)

even though i have my most time as an engi (54hours) they were the first person i used so my score aint so great with the engine..

other great thing about 3-pg server is the bind to make 2 dispensers :d

I can ensure most if not all are true.
They came from the desriptions on the icon set you can download. Some of them I didn't understand that much though and weren't as obvious.

why don't they update the engi already!!!! I want a double barreled shotgun, and somethin gheavier to swing at the spies

still the update should be cool, but I won't be able to play engi for a few weeks, thats for sure

Im trying to avoid playing as the heavy for now, using mostly demo man. I played medic alot and then the achievements came out: I have double hours now! Not being the heavy to anticipate the update >:0

And my OCD says I have to have equal parts played on every class!

And 5 seconds of critical hits after you punch? By the time you switch from your gloves to the minigun and start shooting, 4 seconds will have gone by already...
Pretty disappointed by the heavy update, but I dont play much heavy anyway.

I was going to point out why you were wrong about the slowing effect, but the blurb on the linked site says pretty much all that needs be said:

"The Heavy's second unlockable, Natascha, slows enemies with her bullets. Anyone damaged by her will move slower for an instant, encouraging them to find cover or turn and face the Heavy, mano-a-tiny-itty-bitty-mano. Unfortunately, Natascha is slightly weaker than Sasha, so she takes longer to finish off a victim. As a result, Natascha's great against fleeing cowards, such as Scouts & Medics, and less great against anyone actively trying to kill her master. Heavies that like to jump around corners and surprise groups of startled enemy crybabies will also find her very useful, although they should look for a Sasha-wielding enemy Heavy before they leap."

One of the things I find most annoying about heavy is when you get an uber and run around a corner or through a door, all the enemies scatter. This'll keep em in their place so they can be mowed down.

Also oughta be hella useful against capping scouts, like on point C in gravelpit - hit em from a distance while they're jumping up and all the sudden they are too slow to make the jump.. And so on...

As for the fist-crit thing, punch 1 person to death during an uber (or not, even) and all the sudden you are 1-hit KOing people left and right. Swap to shotgun and you can probably unload most of a clip before it wears off, and so on.....

People are either underestimating the current heavy unlocks or they aren't a very good team player.

1. the time stacks up, so hit 3 or 4 people quick = 15-20 seconds of crit with a weapon

2. heavies wont rape you - ever take on a heavy as demo or soldier? the ehavy gets raped, even with a med they can

yes i know, i play pretty much soley with heavy and with out a med, you get raped - demo is much faster, launch some stickes - your dead! Soldier, just rocket your feet and make you fly = your dead...

scout run around you so dam fast..

the heavy is awesome in small tight spaces where he doesnt have to more around too fast

Think about the implications of the slowing effect on the heavy's main gun. Incoming rush. Heavy sprays them down. They slow to a crawl. They die.

edit: Do we know what the 'new' shotgun is going to be yet?

Dude Flare gun is aweesome! I love that thing. It's so great for hitting enemies from a long distance away.

It gives you perfect crits, assuming you hit exactly on the back, and even that won't kill a heavy unless you can keep it up for at least a few seconds, which isn't the easiest thing to do if the heavy has teammates doing their job. The Axe does NOT one hit kill someone on fire. It gives you perfect crits against someone on fire, just like the backburner gives you crits from behind. And the ranged weapon really doesn't do much to anyone at full health (unless you can axtinguish them, which defeats the point of the "range"), even when you conveniently ignore how slow the flare moves... even a heavy can dodge a flare at a distance. None of these have unbalanced the classes unless you're one of the many people spamming whine on the Steam forums about how certain classes suck and should be removed, leaving no classes left in the game.

I play Pyro like every night and a heavy goes down in a second if you get him from behind. Putting someone on fire then critting from the axe will kill anyone but a Heavy 90% of the time. And the flare gun isnt suppose to do a lot of damage. It's easy to aim and I have no problem harassing snipers from far away, sorry but you must suck with it if you can't hit a heavy.

I hope these actually turn out to be worth while to use. Natasha sounds interesting, but it seems it'd be better to use it in a pair of heavies with one of each gun. I don't see the gloves being all that worth it. I know there's some dumb people out there, but I can't see someone hanging around long enough to get in a slugfest with a heavy. Then there's the sandwich....I'll keep my medic buddy and shotgun, thanks.

Like pretty much everyone else, I unlocked the pyro set pretty quickly, and it really didn't impress me much. The backburner is ok, but I generally don't use it, as I like the air blast to move around stickies and pop medics out of an uber pair or anyone off ledges. I do like the flare gun for one thing though, and that's scaring snipers that get a little too much tunnel vision. They tend to scramble pretty quick when they're suddenly on fire and don't know where it came from, and it makes it a little tougher to camp a spot (unless they're smart enough to realize they aren't going to be hurt much, and apparently most don't realize it). I don't meele much except with scout, so I don't get much use out of the axetinguisher. I've only killed a couple people with it, and it's just more convenient to keep torching them rather than switch weapons and hack at a moving target.

I don't use the medic upgrades much either. I keep the Blautsauger (sp?) equipped, since there's no real reason not to. I spend my time as a medic on the heals of a heavy or pyro, depending on the makeup of the team. Medics still seem to be lacking a bit in the servers I play on, and generally the ubercharge is alot more helpful than extra crits. I haven't unlocked the melee weapon yet. It seems I just don't have the knack for getting the medic achievements, although I don't go out of my way to try for them either.

If it weren't 4:30am, this post would be a lot more coherent.

Just think about it , 100% chance to slow move speed of enemy with 100% crits from the doctor (when fully charged)!!!!!

It sounds great in theory, the problem is, one good demo or smart spy and the wall of death is toast in seconds. I haven't really decided yet if I think the demo is OP, but they sure can ruin the best of plans single handedly when the player behind them has the skills (which unfortunately I don't).

If a team is playing like a team, they wouldn't let their wall of death be stopped. Try out running Pyro's and Soldier's while you're being hit. Hell, even Sniper's might love the new gun cause it makes their targeting a lot easier.

Heavy is still one of my least favorite classes so these new weapons don't bother me much.

Ehh, Arena mode seems pretty darn fun. Wonder if there'll be official tourneys or a ladder or something..

Arena is actually pretty fun. The problem is that people have to sit out (at least they did on the server I was playing). And that's not in the spirit of TF2! I don't think I've ever had so much fun playing as a spy. Just cloak behind a group of heavies that are shooting at something...Stabby stabby stabby

arena is a great new mode.

its obviously got a lot more emphasis on teamwork and survival.

as well as the ability to be useful in smaller lan parties.

if you think about it.
it buffs good spies,
makes engineers and medics more valuable. without those two, less risky movements, much less spamming. i seem to run out of ammo a lot.
the flare gun won't just be annoying. itll be really annoying if the other team's medic is down [dispenser too]
what you pick for classes really seems to matter for once.
it gives a nice break from the insanely fastpaced respawns.

oh and it buffs pyros with the damn on fire thing.

I've never played this game, but after reading this thread sounds like a fun game. Yes, forgive me I am a nub (or is it n00b), but I have been out of the gaming loop for awhile. The game looks fun though. One of my all time favs was the original UT, or known to some as UT99'.

Doe this game have the same type of fun, easy to get involved with?

actually... team fortress came out before unreal so if anything they copied team fortress....


Sandvich is stupid but funny. would be better if it somehow game you ammo though, cause without the shotty running out of ammo seems very likely now.

A lot of crashes too, clears 50%+ of the server out in 1 hit. I got 2 crashes in about... 3 hours of playing whereas before heavy patch i got none.

Actually I was being any class BUT heavy. Being a heavy, I know what their weaknesses are, and with such a wealth of noobs playing the class yesterday, it was open friggin' season :)
