Just a thought i have a 12,000btu air cond window mounted type thats been sitting in my garage for a year now and was thinking of useing it as a radiator for a water cooling system. Is that to big for a rad or to restrictive? would i have to get a special pump?
Just a thought as i was cleaning the garage out today.

One problem. If your pumping below ambient temp water into your PC, there is a chance for condensation to build up on the hoses and blocks. Drips and puddles....... smoke.
Next thing is the amount of power that thing takes to run. Watch your electric bill go higher.
Next... you'll have to mount it in the window of course to remove the heat like a normal AC, otherwise the room will get hot.
Next is it sounds pretty good, put the rad right in front of the air input (building a shroud etc) and run it when your doing some major OC run.
Read up in the more extreme cooling methods forums here and at xtreme furums.
I think gottcha means removing it from the unit and running it as a normal rad instead of an ac unit

Yep you got it. Sorry i wasn't more clear in the post.

don't dump refrigerant into the atmosphere please. also flat tubed rads (like pc ones and car ones) work much better since the water is touching more of the tubing. there is a dead zone in the middle of a round tube that heat stays in where as with the flat there is none.

Ohh, hehe. Well you could try it, but if it's good you might get $40 for it and buy some fans or modz stuff instead. Don't think it's designed for watercooling, shudders at the thought of an aluminum rad. We have no idea on the flow charecteristics if a regular common WC pump would be okay. But, take a dremel to it for us, sounds fun to tear apart!

Don't worry i can recover the freon. And it was just a thought and from the replys I have gotten it might not be worth it.

Indeed. Not worth it at all. Your best bet would be to mount that sucker (AC) in a window where tha pc is and drop your ambient temps. Not to mention you'll sleep better too with a nice cool room :D

I would just go to the local junk yard and look for something like this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/maxspam/IMG_2253.jpg?t=1218714040
Found this baby in a pile of junk got it for 30 bucks. haven't implemented into any sort of cooling yet for lack of funds and lack of something worthy enough for this bad boy XD.

Are you planning to cool a fleet of quad core computers!!!!
I already have central air in my house. I just thought it would probally work and hey I love taking stuff apart.
You could always make a chiller. Basically, you stick the cold end in a bucket and run it through your water cooling loop.

Well if i had a water loop then i could. I haven't got one yet. I was about to buy everything but some more important stuff came up so thats on hold for a while. Thats were this idea came from. If i can make a water loop for the time being then i can buy one later. I keep pushing my quad higher and higher and it seems to really like it. I have gotten it to 3.5ghz with pretty low voltage 1.33v (I think) and temps are around 62-65c with an artic cooler freezer pro7. I Can't imagin how far i could go with water!!!
Just run that air conditioner and place RAD in front of it ...
1- you can cool your whole room to drop ambient temp.
2- cool your rad whenever air conditioner runs.
Just win-win situation :D

so inefficient
Phase Change cooler anyone?
If he knows how to recover the freon safely, then he probably knows enough to make it work

I could probally do that, but thats a bit more work and i wouldn't need that much cooling and then i would have to worry about condensation. Was was just looking for a quicker, easy, cheap way for getting my feet wet.
ducting ac air to your intakes should provide a good boost to your cooling. Rather than pulling room air, you'll be pulling air virtually directly from the A/C

Yeah but i already have central air and my computer is sitting near a vent. Any one want an air conditioner?
