I'm getting revved up to Overclock my 1700+ when it comes on Friday, however, i'm a little scared as well. I've never overclocked a chip before... but i've seen it done many times and watched people do it.

Can any of you guys give me any tips or anything to ease my worrying?

p.s. I also watched tom's video and read his entire thing about unlocking the XP.

well if u havent overclocked b4 then dont worry about unlocking the xp. just use your fsb and vcore to oc and keep an eye on your temps

Pardon me for being so ignorant (read: n00b), but what does unlocking do for you?

If I understand correctly you can change the fsb and multiplier without unlocking, so what benefits does it give?

Check the sig, this board won't do that with a 10.5 multiplier and I have just been working on this chip for a day.

Unlocking, no drinking, fights with girlfriend etc, nerves of steel, a willingness to throw your money out the window (and yourself), a good magnifying glass (I use a cheap 6x) and a real hatred for Mr. Gates.:D

No, really, make sure you do not put the cpu in the computer unless you are absolutely certain that NO bridges are contacting any others. I use all of my family to confirm a chip I have done before it goes in. This is most certainly the best advice I can give you. The chip can be redone but once it is fried.......

Welcome to the forums!!:D :D :D

you cannot change the multiplier of an athlon or duron or athlon xp without unlocking it so the benefits would be that u can change the multiplier

I tried to do mine and scratched the chip carrier (see my post http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57460)

Everything is a <lot> smaller than it looks in the photos, however if you take care it should be possible - lots of other have managed it even if I couldnt.

Just make sure you have all the things you need before you start - a decent magnifying glass, filler, conductive paint, tape and acetone to clean it all off if you're not entirely happy with the results.

I found using a coloured filler was easier than a clear one because you can see it better - i tried using black kitchen worktop scratch repair as this cleans off with acetone, although it didnt stick very well it was easier to work with than nail varnish.

I also had lots of problems applying the conductive paint because it kept pulling off with the masking tape and trying to apply it without masking was almost impossble - i couldnt get enough to stick to a pin and a modellers 000 paintbrsh was just too coarse.

Dont let me put you off, but do be aware that its not as eeasy as it looks !

Good luck

Nick
