im a rac droppper :(
after tring to get ATI CAT drivers installed in win2k, i keep getting errors. after some digging it looks like CAts will not work on Win2k even though Xp=win2k. i have a copy of XP on the way since i will need it for when going to test Atom 330. one of the 2 will become my dvd player to my tv/recorder down the road.

On the horizon a merchant ship in sight,
Crew makes ready to board and fight.
Captain Adak shouts his command,
Colors are hoisted with a steady hand.
Ship swings around to the port side,
Cannons rumble and shoot broadside.
Their prey is crippled, grapple hooks are thrown,
Sound of death, as metal hits bone.
With swords drawn the pirates board,
They swarm the ship, like an angry hoard.
The battle is over as fast as it begun,
Bodies strewn on the deck, rotting in the sun.
Prisoners are stowed down in the hold,
Their new ship is loaded with silver and gold.
The pirates make port at their secret cove,
They revel in success of their new treasure trove.
They take their prisoners and sell them for slaves,
Then on to find their next prize, it's treasure they crave.
We'll sail right by these guys in 3 days, and probably never notice them. Odd that they have twice as many members, but clearly those members are not all active - or very active. :)
Props to the RAC climbers this week: Surfpunk, Jolly-Swagman (who just arrived in the top 20 (first page), on Rosetta stats), boox2 getting into our top 10 RAC, and flying by Donut to grab the #1 RAC - Pixie.
I'm afraid I can stay till the 1st of Oct. or until we pass OcUK (slap me silly if I'm dreaming :screwy:)... or whichever comes 1st. I will leave a couple of rigs dedicated to RAH though.

right it was looking like Atom 235/530 would top out around 150rac. atom stopped around 140rac after the ati drivers fubar'd win2k. i would guess it would be double that since its a dual core with HT.
as soon as Atom 330 becomes instock at BLT, i will have one. no i just need to save for a intel SSD drive, OMG THEY ARE FAST!!!
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=574717
$500ish is a bit much though for a 80gig SSD IMO. with speeds like they are showing on intels, they will be worth it...

qft, I really want to see those 80GB SSD's in a raid 0. Still too expensive though.
Thanks for all you've donated Pixie.
This team, this dream, this folding power
so soon to lose, our Wicked Pixie flower.
We will certainly miss your powerful participation Pixie. We understand though, and sincerely appreciate any level of participation, of course.
I haven't even looked seriously at passing OcUK, yet! You have certainly sped up our overtake of the Swedish and Hungarian teams. :)
That was a wonderful poem you posted, Pixie. Thanks. As you can see, writing poetry is a skill I have never honed.

That little Atom 330 sounds interesting, on a points/dollar ratio. One thing to be careful about is the power supply for it. Very small PSU's are not required by law to be minimally efficient, as most computer PSU's are. Also, they may radiate more RF energy, as a percent of their power output.
A few wouldn't be noticed, perhaps, but if you wanted to make up a "farm" of them, it would become a factor.

Well, I'll be adding another killer quad to the mix as well. With any luck I'll be able to pick up the parts this weekend.

well the psu in the Apex case is a 250watt unit is rated for a 60%eff. not that big a deal because atom hardly uses any power. it was a psu that came with the case. though if i made a farm out of atoms i would be using the Pico-PSU 90watt, its over 84% eff according to SPCR. the pico psu pulls power from a power brick, think laptop power pack.
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article601-page1.html
while that is the 120 unit, the 90 is the same thing but they decreased power as they added the P4 connector needed on intel boards.

well atom 330 is in stock at provantage so i ordered one with 2day shipping. XP-pro which i needed to use the the ATI 2400 pro pci will be here tonight. Atom 330 will be here tomorrow and im off tomorrow! :) the only reason i needed xp for the video card is because ATI cat 8.7 drives will not install on windows 2k. the installer either says device is not support or your current os is not supported. :(
This is sounding better all the time as a very silent, very power thrifty way to set up a PC that runs most or all of the day (with the Pico PSU, especially). Sounds like you could have it running right next to you, and never have it interfere with watching TV, etc.
Edit: Well, the larger brick (120Watts) does include a fan, and it is *loud*, so that would remove the larger Pico PSU unit from consideration.

atom 330 would be a good choice imo since its only $87 right now at provantage, they still have 800+ in stock.
http://www.provantage.com/intel-boxd945gclf2~7ITSP0M6.htm
BTW remove "box"
no the only issue is the fan on the NB needed for 945 chipset. i would use the bios control for the case fan on it. either that or if i felt like it replace the NB sink to a bigger passive one for full silence. then the only thing left would be a 1/2/4gig CF card with SATA to CF adapater, with linux. though it would be nice to see smaller SSD's drop in price more. a 8 gig ssd shouldnt be costing $100+.
well the current plan adak is to use the 330 for rosie. 230 for media box, since i dont need that much cpu power. as the ATi 2400pro will do blueray playback on the gpu. im going to get a USB sound card that has DTS/DD pass thru on the coax/toshlink digital jack.

What's the total configuration of that #2 Atom system?
I know you have the 330 dual core, XP, but the rest escapes me atm. What are you using for a video card, HD, and RAM, for instance?
Would some pics be possible to see it's overall size and etc.?
I'm intrigued as well. I had gotten an itch a year or two ago about making a pico box as a HTPC or even a pvr type setup but haven't pursued it since. Haven't checked out the Atoms yet but seems they're a worthwhile cause in the right application.

both will be configured the same for benching. as i will have to switch parts around. i can provide pics later this week end but i hope for now newegg links will work.

though if i make a farm later atoms will get this case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154091
looks much better IMO but wasnt out when i needed MITX case.
ram(2gig DDR2-667 4-4-4-12)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231119
Atom at start officaly support DDR2-667 but i has some issues on the first bios. still using the first bios to, about the 3rd or 4th bios. DDR2-667 ram selection in bios was removed because it does not work. the ram i choose is rated to work at 1.8v. though according to the bios HW monitor DDR2 voltage is lower then 1.8v, like 1.76-1.78 at times. Leaving me to run the ram at DDR2-533 4-4-4-12. Still DDR2-533 in single channle is more ram bandwidth then atom needs, even a dual core atom.
DVD(being used atm but no later when Blueray takes off or movies get cheap quick.)

other wise this Blueray drive would be in it atm.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129015
harddrive(didnt buy from newegg, can no longer find it listed on provantage so a seagate link will have to work.)

My quad server box has work that is past the deadline...I think it got hung up on something and needed me to give it the go ahead but that was 2 or 3 days later. Will this work still be counted or should I dump it all and get new projects downloaded? Right now it's doing 3 hour projects so it can do about 30 or so a day (if my math is right) but I don't believe it will make the deadline regardless.
Whenever it turns work in it never sends more saying that it won't meet the deadline. I didn't want to have a box running that's not generating usable information or points.

If we get a few more people to do R@H though, then I'll leave
my quads here indefinitely...
Too bad I'm having some electrical probs @ home;
I can't even turn on my remaining rigs.
1 of the circuit breakers went out, or at least that's what I think it is.
All I know is, 7 outlets are not working.
I called an electrician.
He was regurgitating technical stuff I don't even know.
Yeah, like throwing numbers in Volts, Watts, Joules or wire guages
is gonna impress me. I told him that goes over my head (cos I'm short maybe?).
All I wanted to know is when can I plug the PCs and how much.
Big mistake! He thought he hit the jackpot.
He wants almost $400 just to tell me what's wrong with it,plus
parts and labor( I'm guessing it could reach well over $1k with this guy)
that could take anywhere from a few minutes or as long as 8 hours.:bang head
Bah!! I don't have that kind of money laying around,
so I showed him the door.
I'll wait for cooler weather and put those rigs in the garage.
I could put them in the bathroom although I don't think the steam
would be good for them.

Oh it's not a new rig for me, I just got sick of messing with the new SMP F@H client. I'll go back to folding for F@H with my CPU when they clean up their client installs.
I think I can pull off 1 million F@H pts and 250k Rosetta pts by the end of the year :)

The next team we'll take on, is the Romanians, and they are still beyond the horizon (more than 100,000 points ahead of us). It will be a few more days before we "see" them within striking distance.

Many thanks to Adak, who was instrumental for restoring my power.
He gave a very detailed tutorial on how to replace a breaker & electrical outlets.
It was full of BIG, BOLD precautions and safety tips which naturally, scared me even more.
I gave the instructions to a friend. Told him to get the parts I needed and I will do it
with or without his help by the time I get back. He took one look at it and he said
I must be nuts.
I came home to my surprise seeing the TV on without an extension cord running from the kitchen.
My bluff actually worked for the 1st time... should use it more often from now on.
Anywho, 3 more rigs now crunching R@H.
Still have to get a kill-a-watt meter though...
What's even better, no more baby-sitting VM's.
Thank you so much Cap'n Adak for saving me $$$
I didn't have to begin with. :attn:

ok rosie update for me!! formatting drive now for XP and will run rosie when i can ... will be running benches though so dont expect much work from me.
Averaged over the past ten days my PIIIs are doing roughly 400 credits/day combined, so that looks to be the number for your A330 to beat. :D

Ben,
since atom 330 is using the same HD as Atom230 its just a cpu change really. both boards are exactly the same for hardware, the only difference, duh, cpu, a added S-vid connector. When you see "AtomAnt" popping up quick, its the 330, i know not a proper way. While im downloading some benches and not at work Atom 330 will be running rosatta.

We'll be taking her wind and speed, as we pass on the port side. Boarding and assualt crews assemble to starboard. She looks to have nothing we want or need, but stand ready to fire at will if and when any gun, cannon or launcher, is seen aiming at us.
And remember lads - Don't eat the ammo! :D
Pixie is taking a sun shot, and will be plotting our course to the next team we'll be over-taking. They're about 200K points ahead of us.

The real challenge will be the last two teams on this page, Phoenix School at 20K, and OCuk, which currently is outrunning us with 44K.
If the weather goes cool, and nothing else goes South, our RAC will jump to meet and beat, that 44K. I'm looking at the 3 rigs, right now. I just can't run them when it's this hot (90F).

After my own RAC started dropping off more than I expected from shutting down one rig, I put the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, over to my server:
Shades of FAH!
The new competition (AA*) WU's had been failing on my server, for several days!! My output was zero, because each WU was either an EUE, or the client couldn't send it in because "HOST name could not be resolved".
The problem had just been corrected by Rosetta and BOINC, by the time I noticed it.
Egad! :bang head
That's one thing that Rosetta's stats don't show very clearly. How much have you folded, today? I used to go to BOINC's stats for that info (they have nice graphs and all), but it ran so reliably that I stopped doing that check.
Guess who will be visiting BOINC's stats more often? :p :p

3 rigs are temporarily out of commission.
Actually it's electrical in nature - again.
I have two rigs that were idle and begging for work.
I felt so bad for them... I saw a couple of empty sockets... I just couldn't help it.
I don't understand it. I unplugged a lot of non-essential stuff 1st.
Re-setting the breaker doesn't do a darn thing.
On a bright side, kill-a-watt meter just arrived. :-/
Ironic, isn't it?

I just noticed that our Rosetta team points are not being listed in BOINC's stats, for some reason. I thought it was just me, but it's the whole team!
And BOINC no longer has Rosetta listed as a project on their project list, anymore.

I've asked why on the BOINC message board, so we'll see what they say. I'll keep you posted.

I have (again!), been knocked flat by a virus. SOB! So I'm over on another computer, for the time being (the server), with a new anti-virus program - (Avast!).
I've tried several different AV programs, but I have multiple trojans still installed in the protected directory called "System Volume Information", which I can't access, even as the Administrator. (This is a WindowsXP box). I know it's a "hidden" directory, but I can access other hidden directories - but not this one! Best I've been able to do (at the CLI), is get a listing of the files in there - and yep! the virii files are right there! :temper:
The AV programs I've tried, can't quarantine or delete those virii in that directory, either.
In an after-life, I hope we get a chance to:
1) Beat the **** out of these virus creators, with a big ugly stick
2) Tar and feather them
(After renting the "John Adams" DVD recently, I don't understand why Tarring someone, like they showed, (but with real tar, not Hollywood substitute), wouldn't kill the victim).
3) "Cut out his living guts, and use them to grease the treads of our tanks!"
OK, I've been watching "Patton" a bit too much, maybe! :p :p
Fold on! We'll be ready to make the jump past Phoenix Secondary School, next week.
Meanwhile, I've got to figure out how to remove a partition and reformat, a certain stubbornly infected HD.
We are now the 21st team in all of Rosetta, in RAC. And yes, we are ahead of OCuk, in RAC, and will overtake them.

My RAC dropped about a thousand yesterday when I got home to find out Rossetta had crashed for some unknown, out of the blue reason. My machine was running all night and all day while I was at work, but not doing any science.
Anyhow, looks like it crunched all night last night without a problem so hopefully it will be fine now. Anyone else had this happen?

I have not, but the competition WU's we're getting (those starting with AA), use quite a bit more memory, than normal.
So I'll speculate that your problem was:
1) You run this on a Windows box (as do most of us)
2) Windows applications are notorious for not freeing all the memory they use, which causes "holes" or "memory leaks" to occur, in your available memory.
3) Eventually crashing the OS
The cure is to re-boot the Windows box.
I'm looking at my memory on my server, and Rosetta is using up ALL the free memory it can get it's hands on - about 2.5X it's normal memory use.
This is just a guess though. If you check your event viewer in Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Event Viewer, and scan through the errors, you may find out what the problem was.
Another guess might be heat, it may be Fall, but I'm still getting full Summer-type temps, still. An o/c'ed cpu or gpu box really has to watch the heat it builds up.
Good luck!

There were a couple of days where the temperature in here got up to ~30degin here and my machine rebooted sometime during the day. This of course killed Rosetta. This was different though, this time I had an error message. It could be a memory issue, but it certainly doesn't seem so when I can view my mem. utilization in Everest. Of course, I cannot view it all day so maybe there is something happening while I'm away.

Pixie & Donut have continued to shine, I've been bedeviled by this stupid virus problem. Fortunately I've got all my data files off the drive that was infected, and have re-formatted it, now. Take *that*, you damn virus!
Two pairs of folders are running incredibly close to each other, in RAC:
Shiggity and Tyrinon, and
Muddocktor and Hardin
Tyrinon and Muddocktor, you better watch your backs! These guys will run right over you! :D
With one pass last week, and another just over the horizon this week, we're doing a fine job. If the weather ever cools down, we'll do even better.
Guess what team just passed 6,000,000 points? :burn: :burn: :burn:
Until next week...
The Phoenix School team ship is now in sight, at a distance of 97K atm.
Here's where we stand with them:
81 Phoenix Charter School 2 19,077 6,122,690
82 Overclockers.com 98 44,293 6,025,869
Looks like Thursday we will pass them, and become #81 on the Teams list, Oyaaaaaaaah!

Had to Move where the PSU was originally Mounted and make new brackets for PSU's new home ans mod the case to suit.
And now is a crunching Rosetta@home, so now we have three PC ,s a cruncin for the Team.
Will post up some pics later

Congrats to the Team,, now on first page RAC,,,
Our pass of the Phoenix Charter School team ship, is almost here - we have just 8K between us and them.
Helm, bring us to windward. Sharpshooters grab your cheesy poofs and shooters, and take your positions in the high rigging and crows nest. Boarding parties to Starboard. Gun crews, stand ready to cheese them at will, if fired upon.
I learned one thing for sure, in my own secondary school - never trust a seventh or an eight grader! :D
By tomorrow morning, the pass will be finished, and we will be the 81st team in Rosetta. An extra ration of rum for the entire crew will be well earned!
BTW, we are also gaining every day on OCuk.net. They are our nearest and biggest challenge, but we have a long way to go before we catch them. Several other teams to be passed, first.
We have passed the Phoenix Charter School, and are now the 81st team in Rosetta.
We will pass up our next team in a few days, and that will jump us onto page 4 on Rosetta's stats.
We are also gaining on the OCuk team, by about 7K credits, every day. On our new page to be, OCuk is the only team that will offer us any real challenge. All the other teams have a nice lead on us presently, but that lead is being evaporated away like water dripped into a hot fry pan, every single day.
<< Sizzle >>
Great job everyone! or :soda:

Another team ship has just now been spotted on the horizon:
80 NDTC Rosetta 17 2,803 6,317,700 United Kingdom
Distance to the NDTC team ship: 98K
>Our RAC: 45K

Rest easy mates, and enjoy your well-earned day's rest.

Our overtake is about 12 hours away; we will be on Page 4, as the 80th ranked Rosetta Team. :)
Within 5 days, we will pass yet another team, edging ourselves ever closer to the real challenge - OcUK.
OcUK is now 438,000 points ahead of us - clearly beyond the horizon, but every day we gain on them. Their RAC is 37K, (and has been diminishing from a high of 43K, that I saw), ours is 45K, and is still slowly rising.
In 55 days, we are on course to pass the OcUK team. With the weather starting to cool off *finally*, it won't take that long!
For today, I'll see you on page 4! :D :D

Look at the matchups between Sephis and nudave (25 & 26), and Don and Hardin (22 & 23). Could they possibly be any closer? Pretty amazing! :)
On Points, Peglarr is still king of the hill, by a good margin, but the train is coming fast, and she is bringing a load of pixie power, right along with her!
Donuts is getting ready to pass sir_LOIN, after making bugsbunny hop out of his way. I've passed up Don, and Surfpunk has edged up on Hitoikiri. Evilsizer, Baditude, and Ben.w.o. have really been mixing it up, and have moved past Rebturtle, among others.

We are 85,200 points away from our next pass on the high seas of team ships, and gaining 37,900 points on them, every day (approx.).
Quartermaster will see to your area's supply of Cheesy Poofs. We may need to make another batch. :D
Our pass in 3 days will be so quick, I doubt the Czechs will even notice us. :sn: :sn: :sn:
I've just received a pm from Pixie, that she will be gradually switching over most of her Rosetta rigs, back to FAH.
Thanks for all the fine Rosetta folding, Pixie! :)
Our planned overtake of the OcUK team will not happen, but our overtake of several more teams immediately ahead of us, will proceed at a slower pace.
So buck up, mates! We have about 40 more teams to pass.

Sorry fellas... :(
On one hand, we can make a run for OCuk
and sustain it for a long while to build a comfortable lead.
On the other, we give more ground to MPC over at F@H every day.
As much as my newfound hatred for SMP goes, I'm willing to put up with
it... again... for now.
Yeah, I'm a softie when it comes to F@H ; but, should it give me and my rigs lots of grief again, I'm BOINC-ing for good.
OCuk is not off our list yet though, as long as we have them in our
line of sight... just like JS mentioned, we'll get there eventually, just might take a bit longer than we have hoped.
Thanks for undertsanding y'all.

We're just aft of the Czech ship's beam, and on course to pass her, later today.
Stay alert!
Our New Status:
We have passed the BOINC.cz team ship. Here are the team ships immediately before us.
76 OcUK 177 36,607 6,890,137 UK
77 Teddies 10 237 6,621,626 International
78 SETI@Netherlands 175 4,402 6,537,185 Netherlands
79 Overclockers.com 99 46,161 6,506,084 International
Through some strange alchemy, our RAC has continued to hold strong. We are still gaining on OcUK, at the rate of 10,000 points per day!
I suspect some Pixie dust has combined with a new quad 6700, etc., for this, but I'm not quite ready to look this gift horse, in the mouth. :sn:
We are on schedule to pass SETI@Netherlands tomorrow, and send this tinfoil hatted team, into our wake, aft. :D
The Teddies (besides a great team name), have almost no folding power, so they're a shadowy cloud flying past, in the night winds. No bother for us.
Which at the start of next week, will put us directly aft of the fastest team ship on this entire page of 20 teams after us, ==> OcUK.
This is great timing because some cooler weather is scheduled for my SO. CAL. area, That means I can bring more of my farm, on-line.
This would be a great time to sneak right up on OcUK, and pounce. We will be happy to have them play wildebeest, to our lion pride. < sly grin >
Here's the thing with OcUK - when they were threatened by the Pirate Fleet team, they responded *hugely*, to leave the Pirate Fleet, in the dust. Their RAC soared from below 16K to 44K, and stayed there for a few weeks, that I know of.
So, if we want to pass up OcUK (and d'uh!, we do), then we would be very smart to make it a fast pass - give it everything we've got. If we try and do it slowly, like the Pirate Fleet, they will just get their supporters to switch their rigs over from FAH and other DC projects, and then we're in for a long, grinding contest. We don't want that long, grinding contest, OK?
The heat wave I'm in the middle of, will be gone by tomorrow. My farm will be on-line and running Rosetta, as soon as that happens.
In early November, the Gauntlet for our SETI team will begin, which will very likely draw some Rosetta folding power down, for about a month.
Which says to me, we need to do this *now*. Between today and November 1st, to make this work.
How does that sound to you?

Every spare part that ol'baditude had in his closet patched together to make a computer!
Lol. It's doesn't look like much, but it crunches like crazy. Add another quad to the team.
Go Team OCF!!!!!
I said to myself when I wrote my last post:
" I'll bet money that Ben and Baditude will be two of the first teammates to respond to this challenge. "
And here you are, with another half a quad, and another system from spare parts, respectively.
Surfpunk rode in on this challenge wave also, I see. Be mindful of your R/L expenses though Surfpunk, OK?
Any team that has mates like you on it, is damn lucky.
Another great pass, for our team!
We are now at #78, and have only the Teddies team (which is barely even folding), between us and OcUK.
We have a *great* opportunity to catch and pass, OcUK, right now!
The cooler air has arrived locally, and although the A/C is still coming on a bit, it's looking cool enough to fire up the rest of my farm.
Therefore:
Helm, ignore the Teddies ship, and take us to the Windward side of the OcUK team's ship, with all available speed.
Quartermaster, check all your supplies. We've had it all too easy since beating off the Pirate Fleet team. We will need cheesy poof's for large and small caliber launchers and cannons.
First officer, check all our battle stations for optimum preparedness, every 48 hours on the Leeward side, and every 24 hours on the Windward side, until further notice.
If we really work at it, we may reach 50K RAC! Let's see just what we can do, at full speed.
Right now, I have some C2D's to bring on-line. :)

OK, some good intel here:

ok just added 50% of a q6600 (other 50% seti) and maybe later I can add another 6600 doing 100% Rosetta .
:welcome: Bob!
We're hard at it, studying the final, working shape, of our proteins (chasing after the OcUK team), and having fun doing it (be sure to get issued a cheesy poof launcher and ammo).
OK, maybe a bit of both. :D
More on the intel:
After more scouting around, I found that the jig will very soon be "up", with respect to the OcUK team pass.
They don't have any *recent* posts on the matter, but it seems our O/C reputation, has preceded us.
Before my time with Rosetta, but I thought this history was good to know. We *used* to be ahead of OcUK on Rosetta, but they passed us whilst we slumbered on:
August 8, 2008:
We just stomped Overclockers.com in Rosetta!!!
98 OcUK - Overclockers UK 4,397,220
99 Overclockers.com 4,395,801
Maybe there is a bit of rivalry, do you suppose? :p
Anyway, early in September, after we rallied to beat off The Pirate Fleet team, they posted this on their website:
The ones to worry about will be that Oc.com lot. They seem to be on the move
after that scurvy mob cut their anchors.
Well, at least we're not "the scurvy mob", eh? :D
Soon, we will pass the Universe Examiners team, and it will be very clear at that time, if not before, that we are a threat that has returned.
So much for the "lion pride", the "wildebeest", and preliminary intel, as well. :soda:
Although the OcUK team is our goal, we do have some other team ships to pass by, first. The difference in our team points, at this time, make it significant.
First up, is "Universe Examiners" from Finland.

Total Days to Overtake = 8.14 + (8.14 * UE RAC) / 38.2K
Total Days to Overtake = 8.14 + 53.7K/38.2K
Total Days to Overtake UE team ship: 9.54 days.
With the speed of the OcUK team ship, you can be sure it will have passed other teams, by the time we pass the UE team. :p
After some frustration, all my rigs are Roughnecking for Rosetta. That won't begin to replace the loss of Rosetta power from several of Pixie's rigs leaving the project, but with the added member and rigs we've seen added to our team lately, it's a start.

In our RAC, Pixie and Donut are down a bit, but Ben, Peglarr, Surfpunk Baditude_df, JollySwagman and myself, are up a tad. I don't recall TC being up this high before either, now that I think about it.
This is silent_bob's first week, and already he's in the top 30 in RAC!
In points, peglarr is still King of the Team. Sir_LOIN has passed 300,000, and Donut has passed both 300,000, and sir_LOIN. :D
I've snuck in over Tyrinon and SunRedRX7, to take 10th place. Mikey is today's jump-over for me.
Surfpunk has jumped over hitokiri_808, but has a large gap to cross before he can pass anyone else - about 44,000 points.
Ben.world.order will pass 100,000 points today - way to go, Ben!
I have no idea how Evilsizer and baditude can run neck to neck like this, week after week, but they do it. They're both right next to dyoder - and I'd move away quickly from him, if that 'y' has an 'EE' sound when you say it. :p :p

Off topic, but funny, in a black humored sort of way:
OK, I live in a part of So. CA. where every Summer and especially in October, we get the "Santa Anna" (aka "Devil's breath") winds - high speed winds, ultra low humidity, and high temps, too.
Perfect conditions for a wildfire, and we've lost several thousand homes in just the last 3 years, from devastating wildfires, particularly in the East county area.
So today, we have the dreaded Santa Anna winds blowing. Naturally, several fires break out in the rural area's. One was in Campo. The pattern (time permitting of course) is:
1) The fire personnel call for people to voluntarily evacuate because of the fire danger.
2) Some people never want to evacuate, and prefer instead to start clearing any burnable vegetation away from their homes, watering down their yards and rooftops, etc.
3) The sheriff officers or fire fighters officers come around again, and REQUIRE evacuations. You must leave, but they don't want to actually arrest you, so some residents still stay put.
They are told they're "on their own", with no rescue possible, hereafter.
About this time, most sane folks get the bright idea "Hey, I need to haul my butt outta here!"
One Campo resident didn't get these gentle hints, telling the reporter:
"I knew it was time to evacuate when my hair started catching on fire".
:screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:
She knows it's time to evacuate when her hair catches on fire - congratulations!
Not the 6 to 30 ft. high wall of flame heading toward you, not the choking smoke or your burning eyes, or the waves of intense heat. Not the fire fighters or the police telling you to evacuate. Nope - her clue was her hair catching on fire!
Hearing her on the news, I just went into fits of laughter.

I was watching Discovery HD last night and this show was on called "Destroyed in Seconds", what an awesome show, I should've recorded it. Anyways, your story reminds me of this part last night where some volunteer firefighters were trying to put out a small storage house blaze on a hot Texas day. As they're dousing the house a bunch of oil inside ignites and suddenly the house just erupts into a huge wall of bright fire, that sucker was blazing! I can't even imagine how hot it was, nearby onlookers and firefighters got 2nd and 3rd degree burns just from the heat.
While grass fires are fast-movers and dangerous, it's when the fire moves into some type of oil product, or into the tall tree's that it *really* gets scary. Many tall trees will just *explode* from the heat vaporizing (and pressurizing) their water and sap. The tree has no way to relieve the pressure, fast enough.
It's exciting, but so scary, watching a wall of fire twice as high as a telephone pole, with it's own little "fire devils" (mini-tornadoes of flame), dancing around, marching right up the canyons, winds whipping embers and the flames at 50 to 65 mph.
I haven't seen a BLEVE explosion from a fire, but they are the ultimate fire blast, I'm told. The LPG or other fuel begins to increase in temperature, gets highly pressurized, and then blows up when the fuel begins to boil and vaporize from internal temps inside the container.
A famous one was in Waverly Tennessee, killing 16 people, destroying 16 structures, and threw part of the LPG rail tank car 330 ft. through the air.
This, despite the on-lookers being kept back 1/4 of a mile, and hazmat experts on the scene to handle the whole situation.
I saw a film of one BLEVE on a tank car, during emergency prep. training - I want *nothing* to do with stored fuels around fires!
Oh yeah!

My Rosetta@home status has Changed
Ahh but for the better,,,,,
Now Have got the little bugs ironed out finally, I have a C2D E6700 with 4gig DDR2 Ram running Ununtu 7.10 64bit with Boinc Client / Manager 5.10.9 running flat out crunching Rosetta@home, I use a KVM Auto switch to switch between Linux box and my P4 rig.
Also have on My main Rig (see sig) Boinc Manager 6.2.19 new client , which I will give equal time share with Folding@home, also GPU2 client is running ok with Boinc
So these will be a boost for the Team.

The OcUK Rosetta team is in a bind. They switched over several rigs from their Folding@Home team, to fight off The Pirate Fleet challenge.
Now, their FAH team is in trouble, having sunk to 45th place in ppd, so another trumpet call to arms for the Rosetta team may not net them much help. Specifically, they have 5 teams scheduled to pass them in 1 to 7 months, while they are scheduled to pass only ONE team.
It will be fun! :) :) :burn: :burn: :burn:

That's great folding, Ian! :)
Your RAC will continue to go up for anywhere from a week, to a month, depending on how much extra power you bring on-line, folding.
Our team RAC doesn't go down when someone new starts. It's all added up:
Team RAC = All our results added together * a decay factor.
I posted this up about a month ago, for individuals. If you search for RAC by Adak, you'll find it very easily. It is rather nerdy, imo.

Since most of the Rosetta project servers went down for several hours, that has slowed us down. As the bigger team, with more results that needed to be returned but couldn't, we were more effected by this.
Days to Overtake: 1
I'm sticking with one day left before the pass, but that is as much hope as my expectation.
If your rigs haven't sent in their results (I had one that just was holding a bunch of finished results), be sure to press "project", highlight the rosetta project line, and click on the "update" button on the left hand side of the BOINC project page.

As promised, Pixie's RAC has tapered down considerably, from a high of 18K to the current 9K.
With my farm all folding, I've jumped up to over 5K, and still rising slowly, to take the #2 position, just barely ahead of Donut's fine effort.
Ben's the solid #3 wing man, with his own RAC niche.
Surfpunk, TC, and Baditude, are getting just a bit of separation, but will that last? History says "no". :D
SunRedRX7 is ready to take on Peglarr, with Evilsizer scoping out his chances for the same overtake.
JollySwagman has jumped his RAC upward by adding another C2D, but Silent Bob is looking to make Ben "yesterday's mashed potato's", and JollySwagman is right in the way of that kind of ambition:.
Just off hand, I'd guess the Silent One doesn't much care for old mashed spuds. :D
Ian, Trackdrew, and DrShivas are still getting set with their newer RAC approximations. Great to see our new members on the list!
We lost Shiggity & boox2 completely for the last two weeks, and Sir_Loin & Hammer for almost as long. Which highlights my need to work on recruiting more. We surely miss you guys.

Ya, that's what I'm doing. I'm starting to switch over my single CPU FAH client instances to Rosetta. I figure they're more valuable to science this way since Stanford is making their push into the GPU arena, away from single CPU clients. And I'd like to support BOINC in general because it's great execution in terms of ease of use for DC donors.
Plus it's helping another OC team!

You're idea is a fine one, Hiro. A few weeks before you returned, we were #20
in team RAC, largely due to the extraordinary folding power of pixie. She can put out 16,000 credits per day, if need be.
Unfortunately, she had previously promised to return to FAH when the weather cooled down, and has done just that. Her current RAC is very deceiving - yesterday she earned 44 credits, for instance.
She gave us a fine boost, but now it's up to us.
A complimentary idea is to recruit some new or returning, members.

The data is always behind Rosetta, but the stats are more comprehensive:
http://boincstats.com/stats/team_stats.php?pr=rosetta&co=&st=0&or=12
This is our team members, sorted according to their points, for yesterday. Nearly everyone on the list has increased their production - which is a good thing, because Pixie has stopped production entirely, (despite her high RAC, which is very odd. I believe Pixie broke their RAC forumula!) :)
That allows us to continue passing teams, with almost no change.
We are now just 5K away from passing the Stile team ship! So far, so good!

From 700 RAC on up, it's just a semi-chaotic state as everyone reaches for their best ranking. I broke into the #2 RAC spot, but it looks like Donut really will be taking it back, very soon. Silent bob has broken into the #5 spot, but TC and Surfpunk both are threatening his stay at #5. Ben has upped his RAC and won't yield his spot easily.
Hardin is looking to beat the 200 barrier, and hitokiri has his eye on breaking 1,000 RAC, as Ian has.

Our first 4 positions are unchanged, but Donut has an opportunity to jump over Pixie, since she's stopped folding. It's a long term goal, methinks! :p
I've moved up to #5, and Thideras and I both have sir_LOIN straight ahead of us, and we're ready to jump. SunRedRx7, Mikey, and Tyrinon are all looking to leap over Hammer, who's slowed quite a bit.
Ben.world.order is looking to wipe out Surfpunk. Evilsizer is just about 150 RAC from giving baditude_df a climb-over, but that doesn't look possible right now.
JollySwagman is smiling an evil grin over at muddocktor, who he'll pass shortly.
Sno is just about to pass 30,000 points and trackdrew and Ian.wheat have just passed Richard Plumley at 18.2K
Drshivas has moved to #58, and will be climbing his way up the rankings, I'm sure.
Good job everyone! :)

Looks like we made the pass of the Stile ship! Congrats team!
I just added my Opty 170 to R@H. It looks like it's able to crunch two WUs at a time and do GPU2 folding without affecting the performance of the GPU2 FAH client. I used to run a single core FAH client along with GPU2. Anything else would slow down the GPU2 client too much. I wonder if BOINC is smart enough to optimize itself appropriately in this instance. Anyway, it's a win-win for both teams!

I have a similar setup: my 9800GT is GPU2 F@H and my Q6600 is R@H and there's no noticeable decrease in either's performance.
So we passed them, eh? Great! Who's next?

I'll be down in the RAC department until my new set of RAM arrives. One stick went bad, now I'm running stock settings with the remaining Stick in Single channel until I get a new set from Todd. the old Q66 is still giving 100% resource to R@H though.

Hey Evilsizer, I came across your atom rig while I was searching the forums for the atom 330. Is that 276 RAC about what 330s average? If so, those atoms got more power than I thought. That's more than my Xeon's put out right now. Although their RAC should climb up a bit more since they just got bumped down to file server duty without much other load. Changed the OC a bit too, 233x13 instead of 200x15 and I enabled HT.
Anybody else running Atom rigs? Would like to see some numbers. Shame to see a $80 atom board and chip keep pace with yesterdays Xeons...
Also, we're only 113K points behind The Planetary Society.

Well, I have an additional E8400 to add to the mix if I can get it working. Right now, after install, the BOINC manager says "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client" then it advises to select advanced and then select computer and choose "localhost" and of course I do all of that and it doesn't actually connect. I thought this was supposed to be easier than FAH :bang head
Checked the RAH forums and saw a couple of posts on the same issue but no good solutions. Anybody have this experience?

1) Is the rig connected to the internet while you are installing BOINC Manager?
2) What version of BOINC Manager are you installing?
3) What's your internet set up?
4) Did you have a previous BOINC version on this rig? If so, did you delete it first, before installing the new version?
I'm using versions 6.2.18 and 6.2.19 on my rigs and have had no problems, with DSL and running through a wired router.
The Planetary Society has done the "Lanterned Skiff" trick, where you set some lanterns on a skiff with a sail, and have it sail on a different course than the main ship (which is completely darkened for this).
If you follow the skiff in the night, the lanterns will simply go dark after an hour or two, and you'll be unable to find where the skiff has gone, where the main ship is, and lucky if you aren't near some rocky shoals to tear your ship up.
A good trick, but our watch caught the reflection of the larger ship in the lanterns light for just a few seconds. Well done!
So:
Helm: full speed ahead

Yup I got it. The problem was the BOINC service wouldn't start. When I went to look at it the service was trying to log on as .\boinc_master which for whatever reason my work machine didn't like. It's on a domain so as soon as I changed the service properties to log on to my domain account all was well.
So long story short, a new E8400 is kicking out more points for Surfpunk starting today!

The calculator says 13 days, but I expect an extra push by the OcUK Rosetta team. They passed us earlier this year. They won't want to give it up easily.
On their website, The Pirate Fleet and OcUK have been asking each other to join together, and make an "invincible Armada". :D :D
They seem to have learned something from history and the Battle of New Orleans, and the pirate Blue Beard's part in it. (an interesting part of US history, btw)
We will have other teams to pass first, before we pass OcUK. OcUK will jump up in rank, before we can catch them. :p

* Sunday Specials *
My stay at #1 RAC may be ending - Donut is out producing me, again. Ben has climbed up well over 4K RAC, leaving just Bob and Thideras in the 3K area. As fast as they're RAC has been climbing, they must have found track shoes for their cpu's or somethin'!
Pixie is falling fast, with Surfpunk, SunRedRx7, JollySwagman and TC, all poised to pass her, this week, with Ian just a whisker behind them. He'll break 2K RAC this week, for sure.
Baditude & Evilsizer are still battling each other, with Dr.Shivas & Hitokiri just off center stage, waiting to step past whomever falters first.
Trackdrew's up to 839, 1K may be within his reach in a week or two.
Tyrinon, Bootlag, Sno, Flexy, and Teque5 look steady, but Nudave is heading for 200+ RAC, it appears!
Hardin, Don, & Sir_Loin also look steady, but Shiggity will be climbing nicely this week.
It's great to see 15 (soon, 16) teammates with well over 1,000 RAC! Before we re-energized this team, it was just one (Peglarr)!
We are the #19 team in Rosetta, for RAC!  That's up from #78 iirc.

I see others are having the problem, but is it being reported I wonder?

I had an issue with my main system, came back with 20-30 rosetta programs taking 130mb EACH. Glad I have 8gb of ram...

They're either a bad WU or use a bad client, I'm not sure which. Consider it the "5801's" of FAH, Rosetta style. :(
They'll see it Monday AM, and have it fixed or yanked, ASAP.
@Congrats on your recent power gain, Thideras! Quite impressive.

Oh hell ya! I saw that quite by accident, over on BOINC stats!
I did a double-take, right on the spot.
You little heathen! ROFL!
Donut has stepped up his folding power, so he'll be your real target, shortly. What does one say to a donut to move faster?
"Run Donut, Run!"
Or
"Roll Donut, Roll"
Or maybe:
"The cops have entered the donut shop!"
:p :p :p
Congrats on the new system - that should ensure we get over 50K RAC.

Wow, it says that I've reached my daily quota of 60 results and now I can't DL any new work. Of course all of these results were computation errors. Are the DL servers down, or does this mean I'll have to wait until tomorrow to have any new WU's? They'd better all be 1.34 or or 5.98 or I'm just going to shut this machine down and save on my friggin power bill instead of waiting for the project to kick it's ass back into gear.
I notice that no one else has reported this, so I'm assuming there is something I can do to DL some new work.

That has to be an effort to protect the server from overload.
On my boxes, the bad WU's have been in groups of 10 to 20, so when those are gone, my work cache still has lots of other work to do. New WU's are d/l'ed by BOINC, and the folding continues.
In the past, bad WU's have been yanked or fixed quickly - that was one of the things that attracted me to this project in the first place. The client was reliable, and the project nearly always had work available.
Right now however, I've had a request in to the message board moderator contact thread, that has been sitting there untouched, for 10 days. That doesn't make me a happy folder.
I would say you were just unlucky, and let that system power down if it can't get new work for the rest of the day. We are just 8 days away from passing OcUK, so get it going again, ASAP.

Days to Overtake: 8 (maybe 7, our RAC is climbing, theirs is tapering off slightly)
In a day or two, OcUK will pass the Swiss team ship, but we'll be right behind them, all the way. First, we will pass the Swiss team, then we'll pass OcUK, itself.
Helm: Full speed ahead! Watch for the Swiss team ship to pass to windward, first.
Quartermaster: check all supplies - prepare for a possible triple pass in two to eight days, if necessary (Swiss, OcUK, Fadbeans).
XO: start drills to condition the crew and sharpen repel boarder, sharpshooter, and general gunnery skills. We'll have little time for practice when the ships are so close together.
When the Swiss ship is spotted, start doubled watches dusk to dawn.

As soon as I got to the new WUs they all failed. When Rosetta went to DL new work they were all new core and automatically failed too. Not it won't DL any new work at all and the task tray is empty. It's not my problem if I can't get it going, whataya do? That is unless someone has suggestions.

New RAM arrived last night from toddm and my mysterious problems with R@H seem to have vanished. My RAC took a 600 point hit, but I'm back in full production. With the new WC loop my 4.0GHz Q66 is able to run 24/7 at ~65 deg so it's good to go. Just in time to pass those limeys. lol!
Keep it up boys.
Great to hear, Baditude!
We've got some real folding power coming on-line, from several of our teammates!
What perfect timing!
Ian, Hitokiri, Ben, Surfpunk, Donut, Thideras, SunRedRX7, John240sx, even peglarr has picked up his RAC!
We should be at 54K RAC by the end of this week!

Two other teams will be sailing along in much slower and smaller craft - FaDBeens, and Invaders.
Looks like the passing order for us will be:
FadBeens
Invaders
OcUK
but we can't be sure - it just depends on how awesomely we're folding today and tomorrow.

I know from the 9450 I owned recently that the 45nm and the 12MB cache boost production noticeably when compared to a 65nm at the same overclock. We're gonna tear by those limeys now! Hehe.

As of tonight, I'm shutting down my HD3650 which has been working on FAH so my E2200 can be be completely dedicated to this project. Between that and my newest E8400 coming on board I'm hoping to hit 4000 RAC...must get back into the top 5...
*Sunday's Specials *
Donut has risen to the top of our RAC again, with a fine effort. My RAC has been sinking due to some work for Santa on FAH, and using my cpu for programming.
Ben has kept ahead of Thideras, but will it be enough to hold off Thideras' new hardware? Silent bob has done a stalwart job, along with the above, to push Surfpunk out of his happy home in the top 5. He's not pleased with that. :bang head SunRedRX7 is lurking like a Tiger Shark, just below him, waiting for his chance.
JollySwagman and TC are holding up at over 2,500 RAC, but in the under 2,500 category, the folders are neck and neck: Ian, Pixie, DrShivas, Peglarr. All incredibly close, but Ian and Peglarr are new to this high a RAC, and their potential is unknown.
Baditude has just bought a new quad, so his RAC should be soaring, soon. Evilsizer has fallen in RAC ranking, simply because others have picked up their production. :p Hitokiri, Trackdrew, Tyrinon and Bootlag have themselves spaced out nicely, unlike the clumping of teammates just beneath them. Flexy, Shiggity, Sir_Loin, and Sno, are all in that low to mid 400 RAC area.
Teque5 seems safe from Nudave, but Nudave watch your back - Hardin is right there, and John240sx is new. You can't trust a new guy!
Our team RAC has risen to #18 world-wide, ahead of the strong Asian team "Knights Who Say Ni!" team. It wasn't that long ago that our team RAC was #140, so this is a big change, and something to really be proud of.

Good job team! My RAC will be seeing a hit for a while as I've had to remove one of my quads from the mix due to continual overheating. I've replaced it with a Conroe-L for the time being, but unfortunately that won't soften the hit enough. I'll probably see a dive of at least 1k RAC until I get this resolved.
If only I could fit a TRUE (or another decent tower sink) into this Antec HTPC case...:D
@Ben - good luck with your overheating problem.
The Invaders team ship has hove into sight, and as our port agents mentioned, she's small and slow.
Did you know there is a close relationship between the length of a ship and her top speed? That's why most boat races are organized according to the length of the boat (among other things).
Here's where we're at:
68 Finland 203 10,301 8,351,468 Finland
69 Invaders 9 535 8,141,651 United States
70 Overclockers.com 104 52,181 8,094,838 International
The Invader's ship will be passed in about 24 hours. We'll open our gun ports, just in case, but no shooting is expected.
The Finnish team ship is still beyond the horizon, by a few days.
Helm: maintain flank speed
XO: at 8,130K, go to battle stations, as a precaution. Double the dark watch, as well.
That is all. :D
It was an easy pass, but a pass is a pass - Quartermaster, our doubled portion of rum!

XO: cancel our doubled dark hours watch
And welcome our newest teammate - Scott! :welcome: He's already strongly climbing up the rankings.

Just like that? What the hell man?
What's the problem anyway? Surely it can't be anything so bad that you can't possibly continue. Keep hammering them, look how far we've come as a team.
The problem is, I put in a request for team founder to be changed, to protect our team. I wrote a long 2 post series on it, it's back in the Other DC Projects, archives. Basically, if you have an inactive team founder, (like we do), anyone can join the team, request to be founder (and you can only request it for yourself), and once they're founder status, they can kick off anybody they please from the team, change the team name, and "steal" (sort of), everybody's points (although they just get copies of everybody's points, you still have your own points). But you have no more team.
So the 8 week waiting period passed, and I clicked on the "assume founder" button on their website. "Founder change feature disabled", it shows.
I posted in a "Moderator/Admin. contact thread" about it, and got no reply for 14 days. Actually, I got no response until I X-posted to three forums. They finally acknowledged my post.
Yesterday, I happened to stumble across a post buried in their forum, from their Project Administrator. The team founder change option will remain disabled.
They should have told me that over 10 weeks ago, FCOLoud! I'm really ****ed at them, ATM, and I will *not* support a DC project that punks out their volunteers. As the Queen of England once famously remarked "We are not amused". (Then she had Sir Walter Raleigh, beheaded!).
You may very well have the time and patience to work these things out, or wait for them to work themselves out. I have no patience for such crap, and I'm not young, either.
It was a pleasure serving with all of you. We gave those Pirate team guys a real lesson in who they should *not* taunt, didn't we?
I couldn't be civil about Rosetta right not, I'd poison the team spirit.
I'm still on FAH. :santa2:

Alright then. Fair enough. It was a pleasure Adak. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
I guess it begs the question. Who's gonna take the Captains Chair? I'll volunteer and try and hammer these guys for answers for a while longer, but if they keep this crap up I'm afraid alot of us will go the same way.
Just out of curiosity, have you checked with any other teams? Are they all having problems like this? I mean there are teams that have been at it a lot longer than us, why are they still around if it's so bad?
